Welcome Kang families!

This is the August edition of our bi-monthly Kang Crier newsletter. You'll find upcoming events and deadlines for the start of the school year. Our first full edition will be emailed on Wednesday, September 14.

Ask your student for a packet of information they will bring home the first day!  In addition to some important paperwork the school needs, you can find PTSA information about membership, donations, and our new Parent Pledge program!  Get a head start on the first-day paperwork by joining PTSA now at lwhsptsa.org

New to LW? Don't forget to subscribe to the Kang Crier using the link in the left sidebar. You will also find a link to update your email address if that has changed.

From the Principal
Dear Families,
Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our returning families. It has been another busy summer of hiring and adding classrooms in the form of four more portables. We are currently at about 1700 students. We have hired approximately twelve new staff members and several new classified positions. Please plan on joining us on September 21st for our Curriculum Night from 6:30-8:30 pm. This is your opportunity to meet your student's teachers and establish that very important relationship.

Schedule
Based on feedback last year from students and staff, we have adjusted our schedule slightly. Our intervention period this year will be on Mondays and Thursdays.

The first day of school is September 6th. The first day, freshman will attend from 8 am - 2:31 pm. They should arrive prior to 8 am to pick up their schedules. Freshman will report directly to the commons to pick up their schedules and then to the gym by 8:10 am for a short assembly and welcome. All other students will start school on September 6th from 10 am -2:31 pm. They should also arrive early to pick up their schedules.

Wednesday, September 7th is a FULL DAY of school with NO early release. Early release will begin on September 14th.

Policies
It is a requirement that all students and parents sign our discipline and attendance policy. These will be coming home the first few days of school along with a packet of other information. Please ask your student for these documents. In order to get the netbook checked out, all students will have to turn in a signed laptop agreement by Sept. 7, so please plan to sign one of those in advance (see below for link).

Students will not be allowed to change schedules the first few days of school due to enrollment of new students. Students who have gaps in their schedules should come to the counseling office during the period where gaps may occur. Please work with your student's counselor if you have questions.

More
Please refer to our webpage and the Back to School information posted there for further questions. I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming event soon.

Sincerely,
Christina Thomas, Principal

Tonight! Back-to-School BBQ
Wednesday, August 31, 5:30-7:30pm, front of LW
patriotic-burger.jpg
Stop by LW and enjoy a free BBQ dinner while you catch up with friends and neighbors and meet fellow Kang students and families. Take a tour of the school with student guides who will gladly answer your questions about what LW is really like. All LW students and families are welcome! Co-sponsored by LWHS PTSA and LWHS.

Drop off your Kleenex and other supplies
Drop off your Kleenex, hand sanitizer and printer paper donations!  These contributions go directly to your students.  The printer paper is used in the six student printers that PTSA donated a few years ago -- students have access to these laser printers everyday for printing assignments and schoolwork.

College Application Workshops resume this fall
The LWHS PTSA returns with its successful program, College Application Workshop, providing students with application essay support after school each Wednesday and Thursday mornings (during tutorial) through the college application season. Trained volunteers assist with editing college application essays and personal statements.  We also answer questions about the college process and steer students in the right direction for any additional support they might need. More information to come, stay tuned!

NEW! Take the Pledge to keep students safe

In conjunction with The National PTA Alcohol and Drug Free Resolution and the Washington State PTA, The LWHS PTSA is introducing the Parent Pledge program to achieve the following goals:
  • To build a communication network to reduce the use of alcohol and other drugs among teens in our school and community.
  • To host only Alcohol-Free, Tobacco-Free and Drug-Free parties for teens.
  • To not allow teens to possess or consume alcohol, tobacco or other drugs at their homes.
  • To discourage their teens from attending unsupervised parties.
By signing this Parent Pledge, you are letting other LWHS PTSA families know that you intend to supervise your child's social gatherings in your home to ensure that they are alcohol, tobacco and drug free. It also indicates that you may be contacted by other parents about parties and get-togethers. This pledge sends a clear message that as parents/guardians, and as a community, we believe underage drinking tobacco and drug use is unacceptable. Please note that if a family is not listed in the directory, it does not necessarily mean they do not support the pledge. Only PTSA Members will appear in the directory.

Detailed information about how to sign the pledge will be available in first day packets and on our PTSA website www.lwptsa.org. Questions? Contact  lwhsptsaVPProg@gmail.com.
