WELCOME BACK!  BIGGER THEN EVER!

September 2016 is here and BCC is back in action!  We are excited to welcome almost 500 new and returning singers to rehearsals. This is one of the biggest groups of singers at BCC ever. We are happy and grateful to our partner locations for hosting our many singers and families.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS ATK?
BCC REHEARSALS!
One special person who is back is President and Artistic Director Dr. Anthony Trecek-King!  Dr. TK is back from his travels that took him to South America, Africa and Asia. He made lots of diverse and amazing friends from around the globe. Talking to the singers last week he shared some of the stories about the things he saw including the struggles of privilege, poverty and race that span the globe as well as the kindness and beauty that can be found if you are looking for it. Dr. TK quoted a line attributed to Saint Augustine of Hippo, "The world is a book and those who do not travel ready only one page." We are happy to have Dr. TK back and able to share some amazing experiences with our students.
Stella Fisher is in the center of all of the action at the Girlchoir National Convention in Philadelphia this summer.
SINGER SPOTLIGHT: STELLA FISHER

I SANG ON THE TODAY SHOW AND ON THE ROCKY STEPS DURING THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION...
This summer I had the opportunity to attend the "Let Freedom SING!" Girlchoir National Convention in Philadelphia, PA during the Democratic National Convention. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life. Continue to read about Stella's experience.
Owen Rathbone is all the way to the left.  He and his fellow BCC singers were in Cambodia at Angkor Wat.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: OWEN RATHBONE
When I joined BCC in eighth grade, I couldn't have predicted the impact the chorus would ultimately have on my life. Having sung in various groups since the age of seven, I must have seen the Young Men's Ensemble as just another stop in my vocal journey. You show up, sing for an hour or two, and go home. Every so often you perform a concert and your Mom gives you flowers. I knew the drill. It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment I realized BCC was different, but throughout the following five years, the experience I had was so much more than harmonies, sixteenth notes and Mom's smile from the audience. Continue to read about Owen's experience and what he is doing now.

NATIONAL ARTS IN EDUCATION WEEK
September 11-17 is National Arts Education Week. Designated by Congress in 2010, the field of arts education and its supporters join together in communities across the country to tell the story of the transformative power of the arts in education. In 2016, it is a particularly important time to celebrate arts education, as we usher in a new chapter of American Educational policy with the new Every Student Succeeds Act and its many arts-friendly provisions.  In the new law, the arts remain a "well-rounded" subject and are empowered to be central to a child's education in our public schools.

Use the hastag #BecauseOfArtsEd to share the story of the power of the arts.
