Government funding for emergency shelters is being reduced.

Until domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking are eliminated in Placer County, we need help to ensure that victims have a safe place to escape their violent environments.

When you support Stand Up Placer, you are providing a safe space, therapy, life skills, legal advocacy, peace of mind and a lifeline for a brighter and safer future.

On January 1, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order that codified the fundamental truth that slavery is an affront to human dignity. Still, the bitter fact remains that millions of men, women, and children around the globe, including here at home, are subject to modern-day slavery: the cruel, inhumane practice of human trafficking. This month, we rededicate ourselves to assisting victims of human trafficking and to combating it in all its forms.

Stand Up Placer is taking a stand against human trafficking and we encourage you all to do the same. Whether it is sparking a conversation with friends and family about this issue, changing your social media statuses or pictures to spread awareness, sending a letter to your local congressmen advocating for stricter laws and penalties, do something to make this world a better place- a place where humans are not bought, sold and exploited.

Human Trafficking occurs right here in Placer County.

A common misconception is that trafficking of human beings for sex and labor predominately occurs overseas, outside of U.S. borders; however, the trafficking of women, men and children occurs at a staggering rate right here in the United States - 85% of confirmed Human Trafficking Survivors in the United States are U.S. citizens. Placer County is not immune.

Stand Up Placer provided a total of 677 individual services to trafficking victims in Placer County just last year.

The selling, purchasing and exploitation of humans is not a new epidemic, but it is growing in momentum. The sale of human beings is the third largest illicit trade following drugs and weapons. Drugs and weapons can only be sold one time, while human beings can be sold multiple times a day, seven days a week. The demand fuels the purchase of human beings for sex. If there is a demand, people will make sure to provide a supply .

All of us here at Stand Up Placer encourage those in our community to stand up for freedom by spreading awareness about the issue and by supporting our agency so that we can better assist survivors of these horrific crimes.

Stand Up Placer has been assisting survivors of human trafficking and their families since 1978. With your support, our emergency and supportive services for trafficking survivors continue to grow each year. We continue to offer an eight week art therapy program for survivors of sexual assault and look forward to expanding our services this year to include additional trauma-informed classes, programs and support groups for survivors of human trafficking in Placer County.

Why We Do This Why
In our End-Of-Year Appeal Letter we included a message from our outgoing Board Chair Geralyn Gorshing, describing her passion for volunteering at Stand Up Placer.

We received so many affirmative responses to that message we thought we would continue the tradition.

Following is a message from a staff member.....

"Life consists of a series of events, which impact our life............During my social work program, I pondered on where I wanted to do my internship.  I knew I wanted to work with domestic violence and sexual assault victims, so upon researching and discovering this agency, I knew this agency would be the right fit.  What grabbed my attention about Stand Up Placer initially, was how much the agency helps holistically, in order to ensure the typical reasons individuals may be hesitant to flee and look for shelter, wouldn't be a hindrance for them. Looking into each of the client's eyes and hearing their stories, even though it admittedly reminds me of my own past with similar circumstances, the passion and eagerness to help only increased. Stand Up Placer welcomed me with open arms, as an intern and once I was offered employment, I knew I didn't want to be anywhere else, but with this agency.  I hope to continue to learn and grow within this organization and give back as much as I can."

Remember, if you consider a donation to Stand Up Placer you have chosen to save a life.

Sincerely,

" Saving lives by empowering survivors and educating communities to stand up to domestic and sexual violence"
