Former Democratic Assemblyman, Tom Calderon, has been sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison as a result of him laundering $30,000 in bribes meant for former Senator Ron Calderon, who is his brother. Tom Calderon pleaded guilty earlier this year for crimes uncovered by federal agents who were investigating his brother for political corruption. According to Thom Mrozek, U.S. Attorney Office spokesperson, Judge Christina Snyder ordered Tom Calderon's sentence be served half in a federal prison and half under home incarceration. Calderon will NOT be required to pay the requested $18,000 fine, but will be under a supervised release for one year after his incarceration. Calderon's sentence is less than the sentencing guidelines of up to two years in prison.  His defense attorney Shepard Kopp sought a reduced jail time due to his client's health concerns.

The Calderon Group was utilized to move the bribe money in order to support film tax credit changes. Ron Calderon faces up to six years in prison, and will be sentenced later this month for mail fraud.
