About this month's cover photo:
The Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) held a faculty retreat on Feb. 6 at the Nittany Lion Inn  to assess, define, and plan for IME opportunities that align with the College of Engineering's academic initiatives and institutional thrusts.

Additive Manufacturing (3D) Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity
Several opportunities for paid summer research are available to undergraduate students (who are U.S. citizens) at the Center for Innovative Materials Processing Through Direct Digital Deposition, located at Innovation Park on the University Park campus. Students with an interest in data acquisition, sensing, and control of metals-based additive manufacturing processes are encouraged to apply.

Send your resume along with any questions to Ted Reutzel and Abdalla Nassar.

Coming in our next issue
Be on the lookout for our August issue that will feature new and developing research centers within the department.

Joshi and Chandra look to expand study abroad programs for industrial engineers
Duo is traveling the world to develop programs that will help make students marketable in the global workforce

Elena Joshi and Jeya Chandra, faculty members in the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, are globetrotting this semester in an effort to expand and enhance study abroad and student exchange opportunities for students in their department.

Traversing from New Zealand and Australia to Ireland and Spain, the duo is focused on developing relationships with English-speaking universities known for strong engineering and operations research programs. This will allow students to immerse themselves in a new culture and gain a broader perspective of how their studies and experiences can make a global impact on industry and society as a whole.

"We realized that we need a better system to get our students to have that global engineering experience," said Joshi, a lecturer and the undergraduate program coordinator. "We want to broaden opportunities for industrial engineering students without overwhelming them with procedural issues."

Department to launch new one-year non-thesis M.S. program
Applications for fall are being accepted through April 30
The Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering will launch a new one-year non-thesis pathway to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Industrial Engineering this fall which will allow  incoming students to begin their coursework with the intention of completing all degree requirements by the following summer.

This is an intensive 32-credit program consisting of 27 credits of coursework, two credits of I E Colloquium, and three credits of research/paper with options available in Manufacturing Engineering, Human Factors/Ergonomics Engineering, and Quality Engineering.

This program is intended for students who hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, physical sciences, or mathematics  and are interested in broadening their educational credentials and improving their marketability in the global workplace.

NIH grant will support central venous catheter insertion training

Co-principal investigators Miller and Moore awarded $698,178 for three-year project

Scarlett Miller, assistant professor in the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs and the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing, and Jason Moore, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, were awarded a Research Project Grant (R01) of $698,178 from the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Miller and Moore are co-principal investigators on the three-year project titled, "Dynamic Haptic Robotic Training for Central Venous Catheter Insertion."

The goal of the research project is to develop, test, and implement an innovative new training method that uses a programmable robot to apply force to a surgical resident's hand in order to mimic how it feels when inserting a needle into a patient. Miller and Moore believe this system will improve the efficiency of residents in performing central venous catheter insertions and will help build their skills and confidence before carrying out these interventions on patients.

Industrial engineers visit France to study healthcare delivery systems
Penn State students and faculty collaborate with French students and healthcare officials to identify challenges and opportunities
An interdisciplinary team of faculty, graduate student mentors, and undergraduate students from the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering recently traveled to France to study systems engineering approaches to healthcare coordination.

Interim Department Head Harriet Black Nembhard, director of the Center for Integrated Healthcare Delivery Systems, led the team. The visit was part of a collaborative effort funded by the College of Engineering's Global Engineering Leadership Program.

During the trip, the team attended a three-day conference that provided an opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff from Ecole Centrale Paris, Henri Mondor University Hospital, and Saint Camille Hospital, to identify challenges and research opportunities regarding pressing healthcare issues.

THON 2015 - For the Kids!
By Zach Santos, IIE THON Co-chair

The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, more commonly known as THON, is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. This event is more than a 46-hour dance marathon held in the spring-it is a yearlong effort to raise funds and awareness for the Four Diamonds Fund, which is the organization that dedicates itself to finding a cure for childhood cancers.

Throughout the year, the Penn State student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) provides opportunities for its members to contribute to this amazing cause.
