A Message from Mayor Rick Kriseman

The worst of Hurricane Hermine is over, but we still have a lot of work to do in front of us. I want to thank every citizen of the City of St. Petersburg for your patience, understanding, and resilience during this storm.

I also want to thank our first responders as well as our Public Works and Parks and Recreation teams who have been working day and night in preparation for the storm, and in response to issues as they emerge. Our employees help us shine even on the rainiest of days.

We will have a lot of work to do to clean up in the aftermath of Hermine. We have also learned a lot, and will be even better prepared for the next storm.

Thank you again.

Rick Kriseman,
Mayor

Medium: Ineffable Takamatsu

How do I begin this without sounding cliche? It's the last thing I want to do, sound unextraordinary when describing my experience in Takamatsu, Japan, a well hidden, extraordinary gem. If I absolutely had to describe my experience in such a charming city with a single word, I would have to absolutely say "ineffable." Ironic, isn't it?

It was a short 10 days in Takamatsu, but a couple of minutes was all it took for me to fall in love with St. Petersburg, Florida's sister city.

Bay News 9: Tampa and St. Pete: Changes made since Colin, last summer's severe flooding

Both cities say they have made some changes since last summer's severe flooding and Tropical Storm Colin in June.

In Tampa, preparations started getting barricades ready for potential flooded areas and maximizing water capacity.

"We are checking all of our waste water pumping stations, all of our storm water pumping stations to make sure they're functioning properly before the storm hits," Tampa Public Works Director Brad Baird said.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg arts district improvements coming

Improvements are in the works for the Warehouse Arts District. Close to 100 people at the Warehouse Arts District association's annual membership meeting heard about streetscaping, lighting the Pinellas Trail and 30 new studios for artists.

Mary Jane Park, executive director, said the organization is halfway to its goal of raising $800,000 thanks to a state grant for $300,000 and $100,000 from the city of St. Petersburg. The money will help pay for renovating a 15,000-square-foot space inside an existing warehouse for 20 to 30 artist studios.

Dallas Morning-News: St. Pete, the not-so-surprising place for arty party people

When craving a candy box of sensory pleasures, it's hard to beat St. Pete.

You can laze on sugary-sand gulf beaches lapped by emerald waves, then catch a trolley to a cornucopia of world-class art, shopping and gustatory delights edging Tampa Bay.

Famously sunny  St. Petersburg has evolved from a Florida retirement haven to cool-culture constellation. Glass studios, brewpubs, gourmet ice pop shops, smart museums and eye-stopping murals swirl in this orbit. The old pier's gone, but there are more places than ever to watch rolling clouds and spectacular sunsets.
