Note from a First Visit Assistant |

PAWS Therapy Team Dimitra Minter & Diesel |
New PAWS Pet-Therapy Teams are accompanied on their first visits by PAWS staff or trained First Visit Assistants. Andréa Cox, our Volunteer Coordinator, recently passed along this note.
"Oh my gosh! Dimitra and Diesel were the biggest hit at Abbey Manor on their first visit! Dimitra is so polite and able to talk to everyone. Diesel is the cutest little pup I have ever met; he is darling. And he is only 1 year old - four and a half pounds of LOVE! They are such a PAWSOME team and a grand addition to PAWS.
"I love taking teams on first visits. I especially like taking teams on first visits if I did their intake call when they first applied to join PAWS - it is so much fun to put a face to the person and the pup."
Marilyn Huebner PAWS Member & First Visit Assistant

Dog Training Courses |

Therapy Dog Prep Course: Targeted Training for the Prospective Therapy Dog Team
Want to become a PAWSome team? This class is for you! Throughout this 5-week course, handlers will have the opportunity to review and practice the basic skills necessary for their dogs to become therapy pets. We do lots of fun exercises to help you and your pup get ready for real pet therapy work. In addition, handlers can work toward passing PAWS' Standards of Excellence Test (STEX), which is required for all PAWS Therapy teams, and/or the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test. CGC testing done at the last class.
Target Training
This course allows you and your dog to focus your training on 1 or 2 specific behaviors - things you either need to work on for pet therapy visiting or behaviors you are having trouble with at home. There are 4 cases when this type of class would be appropriate for you:
- if you aren't a PAWS member and want to work on a couple of "non-aggressive" behaviors
- if you are concerned your pet needs to work on a few behaviors before coming to a PAWS' orientation.
- if you need help with just a couple of the commands required for STEX certification after a PAWS' Orientation, or
- if you need some help polishing a particular behavior to advance your level of STEX certification.

Clara Wyatt & Friends
Clara is one of the longest running members of PAWS for People. She is the only PAWS member who has had dogs and cats and bunnies as her therapy companions consistently throughout the years. A member since November of 2005, Clara and her Border Collies started visiting at Union Hospitals Adult Day Care Center in Elkton and have added the main building of Union Hospital of Cecil County and the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales to their repertoire. Consistent and dedicated - what a great team!

Susan Greenholt & Xarya
Susan is a lover of German Shepherd Dogs and excellent dog trainer (she is part owner of Greenwood Dog Training School). She and her therapy companion, Xarya, visit at Concern, a residence in Coatesville for 14-18 year old adjudicated boys. This duo not only provides love and companionship to these boys but also the discipline of how to train a dog. What a great team!

Sites to Celebrate |
|
Hummingbird Manor
Sometimes PAWS welcomes sites and teams at the same time. PAWS team Debby Rosenberg owns Hummingbird Manor, a quaint assisted living home in Bel Air, MD. Debby brings her own therapy companion, Belle, to visit residents and welcomes other PAWS teams on a regular basis.
