Some Street Parking to be Limited this Friday for PARK(ing) Day
 
Some metered parking spaces along Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive will be unavailable between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. this Friday, September 16, as the Montgomery County Department of Transportation is hosts International PARK(ing) Day in Silver Spring. On Fenton Street between Wayne Avenue and Ellsworth Drive, six (6) of the 20 spaces will be "reimagined" into "parklike spots." On Ellsworth Drive between Fenton Street and the entrance to the County garage, two (2) of the eight spaces will be converted into an "office." Montgomery County Business Development Corporation  Names President and CEO

The Board of Directors of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC) has selected David Petr as the first president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the new public/private venture. Petr joins MCEDC from the Central Florida Development Council, Inc., where he was the president and CEO. He began his tenure with MCEDC this past Tuesday. As the former president and CEO of the Central Florida Development Council, Petr successfully transitioned the organization from a public/private partnership to a private organization, while achieving record-setting job creation and capital investment results during his tenure. The MCEDC Board believes his unique talents in organizational transformation and team building while running a high-performing economic development program will align well to the immediate and long-term needs of MCEDC. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - Your Chamber Working for Your Business

New Montgomery County Sick & Safe Leave Law Takes Effect on October 1
Effective on October 1, all employers in Montgomery County must provide earned sick and safe leave to employees working more than eight (8) hours a week. After numerous inquiries over the past year from GSSCC and other chamber and business associations, the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights (OHR) finally issued information a poster and fact sheet on this new law, which was passed more than a year ago. There are still many questions about the details of implementation that the OHR has yet to answer. Here is a link to the poster that all employers must post. Privatization of the Department of Liquor Control - This Thursday, GSSCC and  fellow Chamber colleagues will participate in the final meeting of the County Executive's Task Force to evaluate alternatives to a County controlled sale and distribution of alcohol. The proposal submitted by the chambers which advocates for full privatization of the Department of Liquor Control (DLC) in which the County retains responsibility for the licensure, regulations and education aspects of liquor control in the County, will be among those being evaluated by an outside consultant.

GSSCC to Support Maintaining Former Enterprise Zone Impact Deduction - In support of continued economic development in Silver Spring, GSSCC will submit testimony to oppose efforts to eliminate the impact tax exemption for development in former enterprise zones. The elimination of this benefit would apply only to Silver Spring and increase the cost of further revitalization here.
   
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 
The Fillmore Silver Spring will host a benefit concert at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, for the families impacted by the Flower Branch Apartments Fire. A portion of proceeds will go to the Montgomery Housing Partnership Community Fund to assist residents through this trauma. Click here for more information and tickets.

Gandhi Brigade Youth Media is offering free classes at the Silver Spring and White Oak libraries for teenagers interested in learning media production and graphic design. Classes start at 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 19. For more information about the programs click here.
