DEPARTMENT HALTS DEVELOPMENT
OF WAVERLY CONNECTOR

Chillicothe (Wednesday, August 30, 2016)  Due to funding constraints and other financial obligations confronted by the Village of Waverly, the Ohio Department of Transportation has halted development of the Waverly Connector project in Pike County.

For the last 10 years, ODOT and the village of Waverly have been studying and working toward the possible relocation of state Route 220 around the village by constructing a two-lane roadway connecting U.S. Route 23 south of Waverly to the existing S.R. 220, west of Waverly. During this time, ODOT completed the environmental, traffic and safety studies needed for project development, and the department developed preliminary construction plans.

Seeking a written commitment to the Waverly Connector project, ODOT representatives sent a letter to Waverly's administration in May 2016 specifically requesting documentation of the Local Match funding that is required of the village to further the project.  In July, the village's administration responded that it could not secure the funds and requested that the project be removed from consideration.

In light of their response, which indicated that the local share of the construction costs would create a debt burden on the village, ODOT agrees with the administration that to advance the project would be detrimental to the administration's overall charge to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the village's citizenry. Therefore, ODOT has discontinued project development and is no longer pursuing construction of the Waverly Connector. Motorists, however, can continue using the existing local roadway, S.R. 220 (North Street), in Waverly.

Anyone with questions concerning the project or seeking additional information may contact David Beekman, ODOT Project Manager, at 740-774-8852 or [email protected].

WAKEFIELD MOUND ROAD
REHAB PROJECT SET TO BEGIN

Chillicothe  (Friday, September 2, 2016) -  Contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Pike County Engineer's Office will undertake a pavement rehabilitation project on County Road 84 (Wakefield Mound Road) in Pike County, with construction starting next week.

Crews from Allard Excavation will begin work to resurface and rehabilitate Wakefield Mound Road from just south of the Department of Energy entrance to just north of Township Road 603 (Seif Road). The project also includes replacing a culvert just north of the route's junction with Seif Road, and this is where construction will start.

On  Tuesday, September 6, Wakefield Mound Road will be closed at Seif Road, and the closure is anticipated to be in effect for up to two weeks. During this initial phase of construction, motorists will be detoured by way of Seif Road, U.S. Route 23 and state Route 32. At all other times during the project, traffic will be maintained in one lane with the use of flaggers.

Allard Excavation, of South Webster, was awarded a contract in the amount of $403,926 to complete the project, and all work is scheduled to be completed by mid-fall.

For information on additional lane and road closures caused by construction, accidents, weather or other related traffic events visit on ODOT online at www.Ohgo.com. And f ollow ODOT District 9 on Twitter at https://twitter.com/ODOT_SouthOhio and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ODOTDistrict9.

The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by ODOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated December 11, 2015, and executed by FHWA and ODOT.

HUSTED ANNOUNCES STATEWIDE
ABSENTEE BALLOT APPLICATION MAILING
Launches Voter Education Campaign

COLUMBUS - Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted today announced his office will begin mailing absentee ballot applications to voters statewide this weekend. The aim of this initiative is to increase voter engagement ahead of the 2016 Presidential Election in November, as well as to encourage voters to consider casting their ballot early.

"Early absentee voting has many benefits. It is convenient for voters for sure, and when voters cast ballots by mail, it reduces the chance of lines at the polls on Election Day," Secretary Husted said.

Voters need only fill out and return the application at their convenience and their absentee ballot will be mailed to them so they may make their selections at their leisure and return their ballot to the board of elections ahead of Election Day.
