Flu Season is right around the corner, so make sure to get your flu shot as soon as you can! To make it a little easier, we will be having a flu shot day on Friday, September 23rd from 8am-8pm with a dedicated MA just for that purpose.  Call to reserve a slot at 215-735-7992, walk in appointments available as supplies allow. High-dose flu vaccines are also available for patients 65 years and older.

Rittenhouse Women's Wellness Center carries the 2016-2017 quadrivalent influenza vaccine, designed to protect against four different flu strains.

"Flu season" in the United States can begin as early as October and last as late as May.
So get vaccinated as soon as possible!

Flu vaccines cause antibodies to develop in the body about two weeks after vaccination.

The seasonal flu vaccine protects against the influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season.

It is important to get a flu shot every year because the viruses that circulate may vary each season and protection from vaccination declines over time.

 Caffeine and You
Angela Luciani, RD

Need a pick me up? Many of us may be looking for a caffeine fix to help with getting a jump-start on the day or to help us power through the end of the day. Whether it's a cup of coffee, tea or an energy drink - they all share one common ingredient: Caffeine. More people are relying on caffeine to increase energy levels than ever before. Overall, caffeine consumption in moderation can improve concentration, make the brain more alert and can also help you live longer.

With September being Hispanic Heritage Month, we would like to take this opportunity to review some facts about health trends among Hispanics by sharing both reassuring statistics as well as risks. These statistics are the result of factors including genetic, environmental, social, and economic, which encompass diet, risk for disease, and access to healthcare services and education. An individual's personal characteristics and behaviors will also affect their risk.

Dermacenter Aestheticians

When it comes to skin care, a major goal is aging gracefully. There are many ways to go about taking care of your skin over a lifetime, and we will highlight some things you can do daily at home, and regularly in our medical spa.

Regarding aging, the main concerns are wrinkles, hyperpigmentation from sun exposure, loss of laxity and diminishing collagen. A well balanced diet, including plenty of water, a consistent at-home skin care regime, along with non-invasive medical spa treatments, is the best way to ensure healthy glowing skin from the inside out.

We know so much about our patients and we love to see familiar faces (although preferably for well-visits), but do you ever wonder about who is helping you book your follow-ups or draw your blood? If you do want to know more about our team, we are introducing a new 'Meet the staff' section! We hope that getting a little more familiar with the people you see in our office will make you more comfortable and confident with the care you receive through us.

1) What does 'wellness' mean to you?
Wellness is a broad term that means I keep my physical and mental well-being in the forethought of my daily activities allowing me to create harmony, happiness, and balance in my life.

2) How do you feel about healthcare in the U.S. and your role within the system?
I think Healthcare has both good and bad qualities and I believe it will continue to be a work in progress to ensure that everyone has and receives the correct coverage.  However, I am proud that I get to be involved in the system because I enjoy giving patients peace of mind when we discuss their healthcare needs over the phone.

3) What health advice do you promote to your family?
Personally, I think that sugar is evil and I try and to relay this message without sounding too much like I am on a soapbox.  Eliminating sugar from a diet is something that I promote not only to my family, but to all friends as well.  I am extremely proud to say that I know several who have changed their diet accordingly due to observing the changes I have experienced and are currently much happier for making that change.

4) Are there any lifestyle changes that have positively or negatively affected your health?
I think that phasing out sugar (high fructose corn syrup, refined processed sugar, processed carbs, and anything that has sugar in the ingredient list) from my diet has improved my health dramatically.  Not only did I start losing weight and leaning up, despite my caloric intake being identical, but my blood pressure, glucose levels, and bad cholesterol levels all decreased as well! Further, I no longer have the high or low energy and mood levels, which I did not notice I was having until I decreased my sugar intake, giving me a better outlook on life.

5) What activities do you participate in? What do you you do to help you feel healthy?
Yoga was one of the new activities I tried when I gave up sugar and it may have been the perfect accompaniment to my new, more healthy lifestyle. My favorite type of yoga is Vinyasa and I try and do this minimally 3 times a week.  It has helped me gain not only strength and flexibility, but also has given me more patience and grounding in my daily life.

6) What advice do you have for patients seeking to optimize their health?
I think the best advice I have is to take one day at a time, have a goal in mind that you want to achieve, and to get active in achieving that goal.  Life happens and all the craziness that is life will always be there; however, our response to life is what we can control.  Part of that goal, should include seeing your physician for your regular annuals to ensure that is one less thing you have to worry about it on a day to day basis.
