5 Tips to Ease Back into School
Time to go back to school! Many kids are energized by the possibilities of going back to school, but others may be anxious about the unknown. A new teacher, a new school or going to school for the first time can shake even the most resilient child.

"One of our biggest fears as humans is the unknown, and starting a new school year involves a lot of unknowns," says Laura Markham, PhD. She is a clinical psychologist and author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids: How to Stop Yelling and Start Connecting.

There are steps you can take to make going back to school easier. The school-based team at Jefferson Center offered these tips to ease the transition.

Becca Hart, LPC,  School-Based Therapist
What exactly do you do as a school-based therapist? What school do you work with?

As a school-based therapist, I provide individual, group, and family therapy within the school setting. I have been a school-based therapist at Eiber Elementary School in Lakewood since February 2011.

What is your favorite thing about working with students?

I love being able to build trust and rapport with each individual, learn their life stories, and be a good role model for them.  I also enjoy helping students learn how to manage their feelings more appropriately, learn good decision-making skills, and work through the traumas that affect so many of their lives.  My goal is to always have the individual be heard, and to help them feel more successful in their lives.

Can you give us some advice as everyone gets back into the swing of things this school year?

Take care of yourself!  If a person doesn't practice self-care it is really difficult to help others.  The beginning of the year is always very busy- as is the entire school year- but the feeling of excitement in the air as school resumes following the summer break is always a favorite of mine.

It seems like the summer flew by ... what is one memorable moment from your summer?

My husband and I have a tradition of going to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival every year in June for a long weekend.  We get to enjoy great music, catch up with old friends, meet new friends, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.  This year we had the opportunity to bring our young daughter to experience the festival herself.  It was amazing to see her so happy and be a part of the tradition we created!

Dealing with an angry child is doubtless among parenthood's least favorite experiences-yet all parents go through it.

"Anger is as legitimate an emotion as joy or sadness, and it's the most common way children express feelings of frustration," says Sal Severe, Ph.D., an Arizona psychologist and author of several parenting books, including How to Behave So Your Children Will, Too!

To manage anger constructively, children need their parents' help. Dr. Severe offers the following tactics that can help your children learn to manage this powerful emotion-and help you keep your sanity.
