Forging a New Future:
Q & A with Friends of Old Town Stayton
FOTS, short for Friends of Old Town Stayton, is a group of local citizens, business owners, and city employees whose goal is to revitalize Staytons historic downtown district, primarily 3rd Ave. Stayton Sublimity Chamber Board Members Alan Meyer (Pacific Power) & Skip Neill (Boldt, Carlilse & Smith) both serve on the FOTS committee as well. I recently had the opportunity to ask Alan about the progress FOTS is making and discuss the upcoming public meeting, September 22.

Carmélle:  How did FOTS get started?
Alan:  FOTS started as a result of Stayton residents attending an Oregon Main Street Conference and seeing the tremendous benefits that this program has brought to other communities in Oregon, realizing what is could do for Stayton.

Carmélle:  Why is this group important to you, both personally & professionally?
Alan: The city I grew up in, Washington, Missouri, is one of the best success stories of the Main Street Approach. Like many small cities, it's downtown area slowly died until it pretty much became a ghost town. Through the Main Street approach, and with the help of volunteers, grants, city staff, and the like, Washington Missouri focused on their history and core values, and now the downtown is alive again with art galleries, restaurants, boutique shops and yes, even a parklet. ( www.downtownwashmo.org ) Everyone of us who are part of FOTS have similar stories and are passionate about bringing Staytons' downtown back to life.

Carmélle:  Tell me about the parklet. Why a parklet?
Alan:  Parklets offer a place to stop, sit, and rest while taking in the activities of the downtown area. After seeing first-hand how parklets have benefitted downtown businesses in both large cities such as Portland and smaller cities such as The Dalles, it was apparent that a parklet would be a good addition to downtown Stayton.

Carmélle:  As a fledgling organization hoping to make a permanent difference in our community, what are your biggest obstacles?
Alan:  I beg to differ with the term fledgling. We are growing by leaps and bounds and we've just gotten started. I stopped in at every business on 3rd Ave in the downtown area and folks are excited and ready to help where they can. While we do have money in the bank and the support of the City and many local businesses, we will be holding fundraising events as well as seeking out grant opportunities.

Carmélle:  How can someone join, support, or help FOTS?
Alan:  They can visit us at www.friendsofoldtownstayton.com or check us out on Facebook. We wanted to take a different approach, to get some of the boring stuff out of the way first: organization, bylaws, and actually get some traction before we held our first public event. Our accomplishments to date include the flower baskets downtown, our support of the Deidrich Building grant opportunity, and of course, the parklet. Hopefully, folks can see that we're serious about this.

Assist Local Ford Foundation Cohort in Canyon Clean-Up Efforts Sept 17

The goal of this North Santiam Canyon Ford Leadership Cohort is, according to spokesperson Ronda Lehman, "to hold an event in partnership with our common communities to identify and share resources and opportunities to maintain the beauty of our canyon."

Local citizens are invited to join Cohort members, 9AM - Noon, to complete projects. Chosen projects include: Stayton - Paint the Wall, Mehama & Lyons - Mehama Community Center, and Mill City - North Santiam River Clean Up.

All ages are invited to participate, with those under 13 years of age to be accompanied by an adult. In addition to volunteers, donations of paint, paint brushes, plants, gloves, and gardening tools are welcome.

A participant thank-you celebration will follow at Camp Taloali, 15934 N Santiam Hwy SE, Stayton from 12:30 - 2:30PM. Food, live music, recreational activities, and environmental resource information booths will be available. Volunteers at the thank-you celebration will be entered to win prizes.

Sign up or  email for more information.  Additional information will be posted to their Facebook page as it becomes available.

Helping Build a Home for Oregon Family

The  American Forest Resource Council (AFRC), a non-profit trade association based out of Portland, invited  Freres Lumber Company and others in the local forest products industry to join forces in building a Habitat for Humanity home for the Navarrete Bravo family in Springfield, Oregon. AFRC represents lumber manufacturers and forest landowners in five western states, with a major presence in Lane County and the Eugene/Springfield area. Freres Lumber donated the plywood needed in this project for wall and floor construction.
A groundbreaking ceremony of the family's home was held June 25. With the combined contributions of Freres Lumber plywood, and other AFRC members' locally manufactured lumber, volunteer hours, and cash donations, the home represents the values of the local forest products industry.

"My grandfather, T.G. Freres, founded Freres Lumber Company with the inherent values of giving back to our communities. We find nothing more rewarding than to make a positive impact in people's lives," says Rob Freres, Executive Vice President of Freres Lumber. Read entire story...
