Calling All Artists (Reminder)
For our Art for the Animals fundraiser we need as many artists as possible.  Our artist participants can be beginners all the way to professionals.  All artwork must be 5"x7" and can be created in any medium.
Stop in to the store and give a dollar donation (cash or check preferred) per art board as your entry fee.  You can pick up as many boards as you want. Bring them back to us by Sept. 17 and we will frame them for free and hang them in our silent auction.  People will bid on them from Oct. 1 - Oct.22.  There will be an opening reception on Oct. 1 and a Tail-end reception on Oct. 22. All proceeds (including the dollar donation for the boards) will go to Guiding Eyes for the Blind!
There is also an opportunity for all artists who participate to win prizes for popular choice and best in show.  This is a fun event for everyone and this is our 11th year doing it.  In previous years we were able to raise upwards of $4800 for Guiding Eyes for the Blind.  All participation will help us reach this goal and hopefully surpass it.

Foon Sham: Sea of Hope II

The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts announces the opening of renowned artist and University of Maryland Professor, Foon Sham's exhibition,
Foon Sham: Sea of Hope II. The exhibition will be on view September 10, 2016 through January 8, 2017.

Foon Sham will give a free workshop at the museum during City Park Fall Fest on September 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. For more information contact Kourtney Lowery at educ.marketing@wcmfa.org

Foon Sham describes the Sea of Hope project as follows: "I made a long, wooden vessel for my mother, who died of cancer in 2002, as a metaphor for her to travel to somewhere peaceful. The tea leaves, which contain anti-oxidants, were used as symbols of cures-hopes."
Viewers can participate by writing their messages to their loved ones who also died of cancer, on the paper boats that I provided during the exhibition.
Created in memory of his mother, Catherine Siuhing Yiu Sham, who died from breast cancer in 2002, Foon Sham's groundbreaking Sea of Hope installation featured a large, elongated object made from laminated blocks of wood, mounted on a pedestal. This central boat-like object was surrounded by small boats, folded from handmade paper by gallery visitors and inscribed with their personal prayers or messages for departed friends and relatives. Each paper boat contained a cone of tea leaves, evoking the Eastern tradition of burning incense in memory of deceased ancestors.

Sky Stage

The Frederick Arts Council is pleased to announce the groundbreaking of the interactive public artwork and amphitheater Sky Stage at 59 South Carroll Street in historic Downtown Frederick. This building, which predates the Revolutionary War, was damaged by a major fire in 2010 and has been boarded up since. In September 2016, the plywood boards on the doors and windows will be removed to reveal a temporary interactive art space. Sky Stage will offer arts and cultural activities for children and adults including drama, music, children's story time, art classes, folklore, history, naturalists, and film.

For several months, the Sky Stage team has been working diligently with local engineers, contractors, many sponsors, and city staff. We've assessed feasibility, gathered funding, finalized designs, and submitted our permit applications, and we are happy now to report that Sky Stage construction is scheduled to begin the first week of August and should open for our first events in early September!

The  Maryland Performing Artist Touring Roster is a juried group of Maryland artists who have a demonstrated history of professional touring engagements on a consistent basis.  Artists on the Roster are selected through a peer review process in which they are rated on artistic merit and recommendations from presenting organizations where they have previously performed, among other criteria.  The application and guidelines can be found on the MSAC website,  https://www.msac.org/touring-artists-roster.

The second component of the program is the  Maryland Touring Grant, a grant program designed for Maryland presenters who may apply for funding to help subsidize costs associated with engaging Roster artists for performances at their venues. For FY17, over $70,000 was awarded in  Maryland Touring Grants to 31 presenters in 18 counties across Maryland. The application and guidelines for this grant program will be made available in early 2017.
