Problems and Limitations of the "Sex Addiction" Label--And Why It Matters! with
Lawrence A. Siegel, MA, CSE and Richard Siegel, PhD, LMHC, CST
While "sex addiction" continues to dominate the popular culture, so-called treatment seems to be solely focused on broadly (mis)applying the "addict" label. Through lecture and case presentations, this session will help clinicians develop a more sexological approach to the diagnosis and treatment of problematic and compulsive behavior. The workshop begins with a discussion of the inherent problems associated with the characterization of sexual behavior from an addictionological perspective; most notably, its overly pathologizing and sex-negative tones. Participants will then have the opportunity to discuss problematic sexual behavior along a continuum, considering numerous underlying factors and diagnostic criteria, culminating in a more specific view of what constitutes compulsivity. Treatment of such compulsiviity, and other problematic behaviors, will then be addressed in the context of sex therapy.
This workshop provides six diagnosis and treatment CEU credits. Registrants who also want to recieve AASECT approved CEU credits may pay an additional fee of $20 for 6 hours.
