Mystic & Noank Library
September 2016 News
|
The Library will be closed on Monday, September 5th
Full day Saturday hours at M&NL resume on September 10th.
|
A Note from the Library Director
September 30 marks the end of the Mystic & Noank Library's fiscal year. While we are grateful for and depend upon the funding that our two towns, Groton and Stonington, provide, combined they contribute less than 50% of our annual operating budget.
We rely on you - our library users and supporters - to provide the majority of the funding that is needed for us to continue to offer you the programs, materials, professional staff assistance, public computers and access to our beautiful library building for 50+ hours each week. Please contribute to our
2016 Annual Fund today - any amount will help!
In response to our recent surveys as well as many inquiries, we are pleased to announce that later this fall, we will have a new addition to our M&NL family - a new library cat. While we can never replace our beloved Emily, we hope that this new rescue cat will continue the long storied tradition of cats in libraries and re-establish our place on the
international library cat map.
September brings the end of summer, a return to school and other serious endeavors and a plethora of apple and pumpkin spice flavored items at local markets and eateries. At the library, September brings the return of our Friday Evening Films and a variety of interesting programs including a musical tribute in honor of the 400th Anniversary of the death of Shakespeare. I hope that you will be able to join us here at the library for Sonority Sings Shakespeare or any of our other, varied offerings.
Have a suggestion, compliment, or question? Let me know! Stop by the library or
email me
anytime.
See you at the library,
--Chris Johnson

Art Opening Reception
Tuesday, September 6 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Artist Marna Bastian shares her abstract pastel drawings of butterfly and moth wings with the Mystic & Noank Library in September 2016 in her show Wings by Day and Night.
When developing ideas for artwork, Ms. Bastian carefully chooses the medium she will use based on the subject she's portraying. These drawings in pastels, chosen for how they mimic the velvety delicacy of butterfly wings, are slightly abstracted yet recognizable portraits of real butterflies and moths. By exaggerating details of the wings, she encourages us to focus on the textures, patterns and colors of these amazing, beautiful and ecologically important insects.
The exhibit will be displayed in the Ames Room throughout the month of September.
This reception is free and open to the public; no registration is required.

performance of his arrangement, commissioned by Sonority, of "I shall no more to sea" from The Tempest.
As an enhancement to the musical program,
Stonington resident Jonathan Post, UCLA Distinguished Professor, author, and founding Director of the
UCLA Summer Shakespeare Program in Stratford and London
, will speak about Shakespeare and music, how song texts were set into the plays and the relationship of texts to their settings.
