Administrator's Corner
Hello Spartans!
We are off to another great year with higher than projected enrollment numbers as we are currently around 1085. As classes fill up, we would like to remind parents and students as we get going that we have several supports to help promote success.
The Parent and Student Portals for Infinite Campus are great resources when looking for missing assignments. Also, we have tutoring that will again be in the library this year from 3-4pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. We encourage everyone to take advantage of these hours and any off period students may have as we are excited that the library is open full time this year.
Another great way for students to see success is to get connected with clubs, sports, and other activities going on at TJ! We would like to see all of our students connect in one way or another. Please remember to put September 7th on your calendar for Back to School Night.
See you soon!
Hola Spartans!

Denver Public Schools and Denver Water are partnering in a proactive effort to sample drinking water in all DPS buildings to ensure it meets Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for schools. In recent months, there have been a number of news stories about high lead levels in school drinking water. Lead isn't present in the water Denver Water sends to our schools, but lead can get into water as it moves through lead-containing plumbing and fixtures.
While we do not have the evidence at this time that our schools have elevated levels of lead in their water supply, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.

Clothes to Kids Donations
|
Denver Classroom Teachers Association is pairing with Clothes to Kids, an organization that gives free clothes to students in Denver on Free and Reduced Lunch. TJ is stepping up to help DCTA in this effort! Clothes to kids has certain "high needs" items that they never get enough of in donations. Unused socks and underwear are some of these high needs items. Through September TJ will be supporting the DCTA clothing drive by collecting unused socks and underwear to donate.
Collection boxes will be placed in classrooms through September. We will also have collections at our Back to School night, on September 7th. As you come to meet your child's teachers, bring some unused socks and underwear with you to donate to Denver students! Clothes to kids donates clothes to school children, so bring clothes for kids between the ages of 5 and 18. Stay tuned as the TJ Leadership students roll out their plan gather donations. For more information visit the websites below or contact Elizabeth McMahon in the math department.

Mental Health & Social Emotional Tip #2
~ Exercise ~
How Important is EXERCISE for Your Teen?
Our days are full with so many commitments and activities that we often skip or ignore taking care of our bodies. But our bodies are so important for keeping us going! We can encourage and model healthy physical activity and exercise for our kids.
Just how impactful is regular exercise for our overall health?
Physical activity can:
-
Improve mental health and overall mood
-
Improve academic achievement in students
-
Keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age
-
Reduce the risk of depression and anxiety (it is a great coping skill!)
-
Improve sleep
-
Increase life expectancy
-
Help you manage weight
-
Reduce the risk of some health problems (cancer, type-2 diabetes, heart disease)
How are we doing with this?
-
In the United States
: Less than 3 in 10 high school students get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
-
At TJHS
(2013 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey): Only 44% of students surveyed reported exercising with some physical activity at least five days/week.
So Let's Problem Solve:
-
Make it fun! Exercise doesn't need to be a chore. Enjoy walking with friends and pets, gardening, dancing, pick-up games with friends, organized team-sports, hiking, etc.
-
Make a commitment- working out or scheduling physical activity with someone else will hold you both more accountable.
-
Build it in to your routine/daily expectations
-
Use smartphone applications to keep track activity, monitor progress and for exercise ideas/tips
-
If you need motivation, make it a competition in the house!
