Rally 'Round the Flag: The American Civil War Through Folk Song, September 21st,
6:30 PM, Free! Light Refreshments Served
Woody Pringle and Marek Bennett present an overview of the American Civil War through the lens of period music. Audience members participate and sing along as the presenters explore lyrics, documents, and visual images from sources such as the Library of Congress. Through camp songs, parlor music, hymns, battlefield rallying cries, and fiddle tunes, Pringle and Bennett examine the folksong as a means to enact living history, share perspectives, influence public perceptions of events, and simultaneously fuse and conserve cultures in times of change.

Voting Systems Around the World with Dick Brown, September 14th, 6:30 PM, Free!,
Light Refreshments Served

Do you know how voting is done for the Oscars, or for the Heisman Trophy, or for baseball's MVP ?  Do you know  how Rio was chosen for the Olympics or how a Pope is elected?  There are many different systems for voting and our system for electing a President is most unusual. Would George Bush or Abraham Lincoln have been elected if a different system had been used?  How did the run-off election in France last December change the direction of that nation?

Answers to these and other questions on voting  will be answered in an illustrated lecture at the Library on Wednesday September 14 at 6PM. The speaker will be Richard "Dick" Brown whose last lecture on "Bach, Broadway and the Art of Escher" drew an overflow crowd. Mr. Brown is a retired Mathematics teacher from Phillips Exeter Academy and an author of many textbooks, some of which have been used at Kennett High School.

  The Problem of Digital Archives
Check out this story from slate.com on the fate of one digital newspaper archive that had been widely available via Google and then all of sudden taken away. While so many of these free tools are great, do we ever know for how long they will be available?
