Hey, Fremont, Newark, and Union City! Let's Do Lunch
Meals on Wheels is about so much more than food; it's also a valuable moment of human connection. And in turn, it's those moments that make volunteering so rewarding. Mike Hannon, Meals on Wheels volunteer and Newark City Councilmember, agrees:
"Florence was 85-years old and used a walker which often times delayed her answering the front door, though she would let me know that she was 'I'm coming.' Florence was such a charming individual; she'd open the front door and greet me by asking 'How's my smiling Irishman today?' Our weekly interactions were the same - brief and always friendly. Florence passed away about 6 months into my assignment. I was heartbroken when I heard the news. I then asked myself, 'How could an individual make such a tremendous impact on me in such a short period of time?' That was nearly one and a half years ago, and I still think of her today, especially when I'm on my meal delivery route. I quickly realized that even during our brief interactions we establish a special bond with our clients."
