Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs)
September 2016

Something quite exciting is happening in the field of medicine and healing!

Back in 1998, the ACE study came out: Adverse Childhood Experiences: The Re lationship of Childhood Abuse and Household Dysfunction to Many of the Leading Causes of Death in Adults.

This study was groundbreaking and profound, yet 18 years later, many people have never heard of this study, or its implications for healthcare.  I recently spoke at 2 conventions of Naturopathic Physicians. When I asked the audience I was surprised to see only a handful of attendees put up their hands! It's astonishing that so few people have heard about this study!

The Huffington Post actually published an article entitled, The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study - the Largest Public Health Study You Never Heard Of.

The exciting news is that finally, after all these years, the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on health and disease is making it's way into our collective consciousness and it starting to generate the interest and attention that it deserves.

I myself have been speaking on this subject all over the US and Canada at many Naturopathic Conventions and Universities.

There has also been an important groundbreaking film created about ACEs, called,  "Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope."

I find all of this extremely encouraging! I intend to continue doing my part to bring awareness to this critical piece of the healing puzzle and advocate for the inclusion of addressing and healing Adverse Childhood Experiences, Stress and Trauma in all of our naturopathic, medical and healing practices.

This fall, and into 2017, I have many upcoming speaking and teaching engagements where the integration of treating ACEs, Trauma and Stress in medical and healing practice will be a primary focus of my presentations.

At the Naturopathic Medical Students Association (NMSA) annual convention in September, I will be discussing Childhood Trauma and its relationship to obesity, IBS and other digestive problems.  Also in September I will be teaching an intensive weekend workshop at Bastyr University on How Biography Becomes Biology and How to Heal, which is a comprehensive training in Integrative Mind-Body Medicine.
Later this fall I will be speaking on ACEs at the
Ontario Association of Naturopathic Doctors (OAND) and the  Illinois Association of Naturopathic Physicans (ILANP) and I will be teaching an intensive weekend workshop at the  National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) , on Mind-Body Integrative Medicine, including how to integrate and address ACEs as part of our treatment approach as Physicians and other health practitioners.

This is an exciting time to be a physician or other health practitioner. This information, understanding it and fully integrating it into practice can, and should, revolutionize health care! I am very excited to be a part of bringing this important advance to medicine.

In next month's newsletter, I will share additional information on this important topic! Stay tuned...
