Century-old Closter School to Become Condo Development
The Zoning Board approved an application to convert the Village Middle School - a 100-year-old, abandoned public school - to a condominium property development. The application for 33 condominium units was unanimously approved at the July 27 Zoning Board meeting.

Freddie Mac Releases NYC Market Indicator
Freddie Mac released its monthly Multi-Indicator Market Index (MiMi), measuring housing activity on a national and state scale and providing relative data for the top 100 metro areas in the nation. According to MiMi, the U.S. is on the low end of in range and improving. Purchase applications are up 1.7 percent but are still considered weak. PTI is down 1.05 percent.

EBCBOR Global Council Goes to International Real Estate Summit in Incheon, South Korea.
5 members of our Global Business Council attended the International REALTOR Conference and Expo in Incheon,
South Korea. This is the largest trade exhibition in Asian real estate. Companies from over 20 countries from domestic to foreign large-scale development to smaller chambers of commerce were in attendance. This conference gave EBCBOR the opportunity to build new business relationships with professionals around the world.

Do International Real Estate Investors Have to Pay U.S. Taxes After A Sale?
Gains from the sale of U.S. real estate are subject to federal income tax and, in most cases, state and/or local income taxes. Many local jurisdictions also impose a separate real estate transfer tax. Upon the sale of the property, the owner must file a U.S. tax return and may have to withhold tax under the Foreign Investment in Real Property Act (FIRPTA).

N.J. Supreme Court fast tracks affordable housing case
The state Supreme Court will hear a case that could ramp up construction of affordable housing units in suburbs across New Jersey by tens of thousands of units. In the latest chapter of the Mount Laurel litigation that dates to the 1970s, the Supreme Court said it will be fast-tracking an appeal filed by housing advocates for the poor.
