 Health Screening: Tuesday, September 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room. Provided and funded by Northern Arizona Healthcare, this free screening is designed to assess the risk of diabetes and heart disease by measuring cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood glucose. No appointment is necessary; Spanish translators will be available.
- Polynesian Dance and Culture Lecture, Part 2: Saturday, September 10, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the community room. Presenter Kumu Kalena, who is a Polynesian dance instructor, will continue her exploration of island dancing, focusing on Maori New Zealand, Tongan, and Fijian dances.
- American Red Cross Blood Drive: Friday, September 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the community room.

Love a Mystery? Join the Club!
|
The Mystery Book Club is resuming its meetings after a summer hiatus. The club meets the second Tuesday of the month, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., in the Quiet Study room at the Library. The next meeting is Tuesday, September 13. The books that will be discussed are "The Oath," by John Lescroart, and "A Demon Summer," by G.M. Malliet.
The Mystery Book Club is a small group that welcomes newcomers. There are no requirements for attending other than reading the books and participating in a stimulating discussion. If you have any questions, please contact Annette Star Lustgarten at [email protected] or 928-282-3845.

Weaving and Spinning Display

Members of the Verde Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild will demonstrate their skills and display their work at the Library from September 12 through 29. Don't miss this opportunity to see the beautiful crafts created by talented local fiber artists.

Movies in September
|
Join us for a free movie on Monday nights in September, starting at 6 p.m. in the community room. Please note there will be no movie on Labor Day.

 September 12: Dark Horse, an inspirational documentary featuring a group of working-class friends who decide to enter the elite sport of horse racing.
- September 19: Maggie's Plan, a comedy about a quirky New Yorker who finds herself involved in a love triangle with a professor and his eccentric wife.
- September 26: Me Before You, based on the novel by Jojo Moyes, about a young woman who takes on the job of caring for a man paralyzed in an accident.

Youth Activities Ahead!
|
A big thank you goes to the Friends of the Library for ensuring another awesome summer for Sedona youth. During June and July, just over 1,600 children, teens, and parents attended special library events for youth, with the cost of many of the programs being covered by the Friends.
Our fall lineup includes three story time sessions a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., and Saturdays at 11 a.m.), in addition to these programs:
- Chess Club: On Thursdays in September and October from 3 to 5 p.m., starting September 8.
- Homeschool Families Gathering: On the first Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m., beginning September 7.
- YUM! Book Bytes Tutoring: For first-graders needing extra help with reading, beginning September 19. Check our online calendar for tutoring schedule.
- Constitution Week: Daughters of the American Revolution display in the children's room September 12 through 24 and Constitution Day program for children on Saturday, September 17, at 4 p.m.

Donor Spotlight
|
 And the winners are... as cute as can be!
Young readers from across Sedona were rewarded for their summer reading by a host of local library partners. Readers tracked their minutes, and the more they read, the better their chances to win exciting items from a display case full of donated toys.
"This is exactly what I wanted," said a joyous Ethan D'Adamo (bottom right), when he won the Perplexus Epic, donated by Tlaquepaque Toy Town.
"I can't believe I got this," exclaimed Sonia Lee (top left) when she won SmartLab's The Amazing Squishy Brain, also from Toy Town.
Congratulations to these young readers, and many thanks to all the summer reading program partners: Friends of the Sedona Library, Tlaquepaque Toy Town, Whole Foods, Famous Pizza, Starbucks, Bookman's, Java Love, Harkins, City of Sedona Parks and Recreation, and Arizona State Parks.

Library Events in the Village

 Arizona Humanities Program: On Monday, September 12, Arizona historian Jim Turner will present "A Pictorial History of Arizona from Prehistory to Present Day." The presentation begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, 55 Rojo Drive in the Village of Oak Creek. Funded by Arizona Humanities and Friends of the Library, the program is free and open to the public. Donations are always welcome! This location offers plenty of parking and seating.
- Village Library Open House: Help us celebrate our one-year anniversary at Bell Rock Plaza on Wednesday, September 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. Stop by the Village library at Suite 51 A to enjoy refreshments and win prizes. Ask for a demonstration of our new self-service Library Document Station and learn how to use our mobile print option.
- Community Book Discussion: Participate in the book discussion of "Vanished Arizona" by Martha Summerhayes on Tuesday, September 27, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds, 405 Jacks Canyon Road. Pick up your loaner copy of the book at SPL-V. This title is also available in ebook format. Please call the library if you need assistance downloading the ebook to your e-reader or tablet.
