Mark your calendars --  Pie Town Festival
Saturday, September 10, 2016

Hello everyone, a lot has happened since our last newsletter.  We have had a few additions to the Fur and Feather Family.  A new pen has been built so we can have more dogs in a safe environment. A new sign at the gate has been painted as well.
The Pie Festival is almost here and we are very excited to be attending.  We have a nice big tent and some furry adoptable friends hanging out under our Big Top so be sure to bring all your friends and come by our booth. This event is a great way to support your community. Look for our new Fur and Feather banner! Also we will have new T-shirts with our new logo.
National Pet Issues Statistics
Sometimes statistics are just too vast or vague to understand; however, here is some information from the ASPCA that we found that may put you in a tail spin. Why are there so many abandoned, neglected or  relinquished  pets in the United States?
The American Humane Association estimates approximately 8 million animals enter shelters each year.
Here are some other statistics:
  • Each year, about 3.7 million animals are euthanized (American Humane Association).
  • 5 in 10 dogs and 7 in 10 cats in shelters are euthanized simply because there is no one to adopt them (ASPCA).
  • 25 percent of shelter dogs are purebred (ASPCA).
  • 10 to 20 percent of dogs and cats owned are adopted from shelters (ASPCA).
This is so sad. What more can we do? This is a national problem that has gone on for a long time. There must be an answer? What do you think? Let us know through email or our Facebook site.

Pretty Boy Steve, the Brave Kitten

We found a kitten that may have been thrown out of a car near Pie Town. A caller informed us about a kitten needing to be rescued and they  said the tiny kitten was either put in a coffee can and thrown out of a car or put in the can and left in the middle of the road! He looked like he had been hit by a car or suffered road rash from being tossed on the highway. He was rushed to see Dr. Duncan, was examined, and stitched up, given antibiotics and plenty of water. The vet said he was going to be ok. The Faith Fund will help with some of this little fellow's medical bills. His name is now Pretty Boy Steve and he is doing great. As soon as he gets a bit older he will be neutered with funds from the Zimmerman Foundation. It is this type of community support that helps Fur and Feather do the work we love for abandoned animals in Catron County.

Pretty Boy Steve doing much better
Steve is healing up wonderfully! His wounds have all healed, and is getting along just fine. He will always be a special needs cat due to the fact that most of his upper lip is gone and his little eye still weeps and needs to be dressed with eye ointment. He doesn't seem to be affected by any of the trauma he endured. He is taking on giant reptiles like this fat horned toad like he is the baddest man in the house. What a great spirit Steve has. Do cats really have nine lives?

Pie Town Festival 2016

Sponsored by Pie Town Rising Stars
Saturday September 10, 2016

The Pie Town Rising Stars and members of Pie Town are excited to celebrate our 36th annual Pie Festival on September 10, 2016 with our friends from the past and new friends as we celebrate new beginnings.

We have a lot of fun, food and entertainment planned and hope you can join us for a great day of celebration.

The main event is the Pie Baking Contest.    Go here to see rules and information

We will organize and pre-assign the vendors so we can provide a program with a map to make finding your favorite vendors easier.  Go here for vendor information and registration.

This year we will sell individual pies (6 inch) instead of serving slices.
Last year's fun run - the π-k Run- was a great addition to our festival and so we'll be doing it again this year.
Go here for more information and find out how you can help sponsor the run.

We will have entertainment throughout the park all day to add to the festivities. If you would like to perform for an hour or so during the day, contact  Megan .

And, as always, we will have pie eating contests, our famous horny toad races and much more.

Visit our local organizations' booths to find out all that's going on in Pie Town.

Grading driveway continues

Jonathon working on phase one of drive improvement

The driveway and road that brings people into the property at Fur and Feather is getting a much needed grading and load or two of rock for the low spots.  Work will continue for a few days and after  another rain more grading and loads of rock will be brought in to make a smooth, less muddy ride. If you are planning to come out to visit in the next week or so keep an eye out for the tractor or dump trucks.

Grooving and a Hooving

Brad Bueachamp trimming hooves

Last week Brad, Jonathan and Sarah were working hard with our three horses, cleaning up and trimming their hooves. One of our horses, Little Joe, is having a hard time standing on one of his hooves while having the other hooves trimmed.  He is about 30 years old and has bad arthritis in his knee.  We have been keeping an eye on him, and he gets senior feed and supplements for older horses. If anyone wants to help with handling and grooming our horses, please contact Em on Facebook and she will set you up some regular days you can come out to our beautiful sanctuary, enjoy the day, and help one of our senior horses get some greatly appreciated love. All of our horses are seniors and can't eat any sort of hay so they are on pellets and need  supplements. If you are so inclined to donate, you can get us senior feed at the local feed store in Quemado.  Genine and Brad at the Gatherin' Place in Pie town welcome you to drop off any donations for Fur and Feather.  Just let Sarah Ross know you have so she can pick it up.     575-773-4674

Walkin' the dog
Shiner working it on treadmill

You may laugh out loud at this photo; however, Shiner is getting a great workout on our latest invention. Sarah  got an old treadmill out of one of the storage sheds on the property, cleaned it up and put a cage around it and stuck Shiner on it to see if she could get the boy to walk on it and get some much needed exercise. Guess what? It worked. Not only does it work the dogs love it. This will free up time for the few trainers we have at Fur and Feather. In fact, we only have one trainer, and that would be Sarah. This contraption will be so useful as winter approaches because when it is too cold outside for human interaction with the animals, putting them on the treadmill in a warm building will be a big relief. This brings up the topic of our future project--a covered agility course. We were the recipient of a grant from The Babes and Bullies Grant that will help to help  fund this play yard. We have applied for another grant for this project, but we won't know if we got it until next year. We have the budget, design and location finished but we are still looking for contractors to give us a decent bid. Hopefully that will happen in the next month.  We will be planning a work day to clear the area where we want to put the agility course. If you want to come out and stay a day or so, let us know. You can bring your camper, pitch a tent, or sleep under the stars.  We will keep you posted on details and progress.
Babes and Bullies is a group of people out of Albuquerque that support changing the misconceptions about pit bulls. There next fundraiser will be
Dia De La Perros on October 9, 2016 at Tiguex Park in Albuquerque. This is another event will be putting up a booth. Events like these help us to get the word out about our effort to find forever homes for our animals.  We want to invite anyone who thinks they can help out on the day of the event. We need you and your support so please call Sarah @ 575-773-4674.
Consuela's Mona Lisa Smile
Fur and Feather has a number of senior dogs and one of the most unique and sweetest is Consuela. She is a greyhound cross and has been at the sanctuary for as long as anyone can remember. She had a few people interested in her but her smile may seem a bit out of the ordinary for most folks. Now our sweet Consuela is sick.  She has dysplasia and has stopped eating.  It's not that she isn't going to get the medical care she needs, it's just that it would be so nice to find her a home so she can get some extra love and care.  Her funny smile is hard to catch on camera, but when she gets excited she bares her teeth, not in aggression, but in a smile of love.
Consuela loves children and other dogs

FFAA has a new pen
Room for more dogs
Although Fur and Feather has 90 acres, we could always use more enclosures to separate the pups into play groups. The latest pen is finished, helping with overcrowding. Putting too many dogs in one pen causes friction. Doc, Em, Sarah, Jonathan, and Brad all pitched in to get this finished before the winter. We hope to start another one soon. If you want to come on out and help out by digging some holes, give us a ring. We are always looking for volunteers!
Update on caretaker's abode

This summer has been a period of ups and down trying to find suitable housing for our caretakers, Doc and Em. It looks like we found something that will work. A 60 foot single-wide mobile home will be moved on Fur and Feather property. It will need some tender loving care but we are sure we can all work together to make it into a great home. With winter coming, Doc and Em were talking about moving out to warmer parts of the country. We have been so fortunate to have found these folks. They have been an important addition to our crew. Now sooner, rather than later, we should be getting this mobile home out to Fur and Feather. Em and Doc will be at the Pie Town Pie Festival helping out. So come by and meet them.
Don't forget you can share on our newsletter. Send us your inspiring thoughts, photos, and information that may be of interest to our readers. Also, please share this newsletter with people wanting to hear about Fur and Feather's work with the animals. It is never a dull moment! You are all part of this community and we welcome your input.

Sincerely,

All FFAA staff, directors and volunteers

Ways to Support
 Fur and Feather Animal Assistance

Adopt a dog
Sponsor a dog
Here at Fur and Feather every animal deserves a chance. But not all of our special friends get the home or family they deserve.

(Please read the story about Consuela.)

Every one of our animals is cared for and loved. Some of our dogs have special needs, special meals or medication for a condition they may have. By sponsoring one of our dogs, you can help pay for spay or neuter, special medication, or special foods. It also will help lower the adoption fee for that specific dog. We will send you a photo of the sponsored pet and a Certificate of Sponsorship. Most of these dogs are not adoptable to most homes, so they will be living out their lives here at Fur and Feather. Of course you will be able to come visit your new pet and play with them, groom them, feed them or sharing your love. Just call and make an appointment.
Please consider helping  just one of our special furry friends. If you can't adopt, why not sponsor?
By pledging as little as $10 a month you will be helping a special soul. We will be sending out another email with photos and descriptions so you can find just the right pet to share your love with forever.
Featured Pets
Levi  is a very special boy. He was found in the Cibola forest tied to a tree! He was very confused when he first came and did not quite know how to be a dog. He had some behavioral issues. We have been working with him and this pup has made great progress.  Levi has come a long way and if the right person comes along, he could make a great new friend. Levi is an Australian Shepherd and  is about a year and a half old. He is high energy but very trainable.
Levi
Benny is  great dude. He is pretty high energy and very smart. He is a quick learner and does best one-on-one with his person. He would be a great dog for an outdoorsy type, or a candidate for agility. We think he is a Heeler cross. Benny is ready for his forever home.
Benny
Hank
This little guy is so cool. He is a Dachshund Staffordshire Terrier cross. He gets along with everyone. Hank is medium to high energy, and will be a very loyal friend. He is good with children and cats. Hank catches  on pretty quickly. We think he would make someone very happy.

Hank

Bonnie
Bonnie came in with Clyde. They were both found near the Sawtooths. Bonnie is a red hound and just about 2 years old.  She is a little shy but very loving and easily trained.  She is good with children and cats and just about everything. She is ready for her forever home.
Bonnie
Clyde
Clyde came in with Bonnie (above). They were found near the Sawtooths. Clyde is also a hound and around 2 years old.  Clyde is super cool and laid back.  He is well behaved and learns quickly.  He would make some family very happy.
Clyde
Lyla would make a great family dog. She is still a pup and could use some more training. She is very smart and learns fairly quickly.  She is great with children and most other animals.  She is not yet spayed but she will be and can be seen as up for adoption very soon. She is about 9 months old.
Lyla
Winslow  is a wonderful boy! He is about 7 or 8 years old. He's great with children and all other animals.  He would do well in a one pet family because he strives for all the attention.  He is a very loving boy and is waiting for his forever home.

Clover

Clover  came to us with two other kittens and their mother. It was a round-up for sure. Clover had 23 ticks in her little kitten ears! It was horrible.  Her sister, brother, and mother did not have as many. She developed a major ear infection. She is still on antibiotics as of now. The rest of her family has found new homes. Clover is still recovering at Sarah's home as she needs a while longer to heal from those nasty things.

Brad with Sir Earl
Earl was abandoned by his mother in Pie Town. Brad has been nursing him back to health. The first few weeks
were iffy for little Earl. Now he is doing great and running and playing like a normal kitten. Brad did good!
Earl getting ready to pounce
Waldo  and Crosby
Green grass is here, and what is more fun than frolicking in it? Waldo the cat has been with us for some time now and is one of our friendliest cats. Crosby was one of Laurie's dogs. He is  a character -- he runs laps as fast as he can when he is excited!
Sunny day fun
This is one of our largest compatible  group of dogs who all get along. Here's Nakeda, Bonnie and Clyde, Rudy, and Sweeny all having a fun time.
Rudy a permanent  resident
Permanent resident Rudy

This is Rudy he is an Australian Shepherd. He came to live at Fur and Feather in May 2012. He is 11 years old. Rudy is not considered adoptable because he  is considered high risk. He was surrendered after he bit a child who was trying to hold him down and a second time when his rescuer accidentally closed the draw on his tail. Rudy is temperamental and chooses who can give him attention and when. He can be grumpy, and will growl or snap. He has long hair and it  mats up really bad. He needs to be sedated for grooming Which is pretty costly. The good news is, Rudy really has taken to our caretaker, Doc. Rudy has a forever home here at FFAA and is happy to run in a large pen with other dogs.
