When you go to a wounded place with the intention of making a gift of beauty for it, you undertake an existential act. You know that what you do may never be seen by another human. You won't get credit for it. Winds, rains, animals, or passing traffic will revise it.
You know, too, that this gift you're making won't revive the place. But that's not why you're doing it. You do it because you have to, because you recognize that this place has given a lot to those (human and not human) who have inhabited it, passed through it, loved it, and now you are compelled to give something back.
For all of us who live in this lovely, fragile, wondrous world, the choice to love it; value it as it is, even as we strive to make it better; and meet it with a gift of beauty is a radically conscious act.
If you refuse to take the action that compels you, you permit not just a siege on your environment but on your values as well. But when you make this spontaneous, anonymous, heartfelt gift of beauty, you bestow on your life and your relationship with the world the greatest possible value.
