A Message from our President,

I am proud to share with all of you that our Chamber has four (4) members who are Finalists in receiving the annual Fernando Award. If you did not know, the Fernando Award is the highest award for volunteerism and philanthropy in the San Fernando Valley. Please join me in congratulating our four members, Paul Davis, Horace Heidt, Mike Quiroga and Dale Surowitz for this wonderful accomplishment. Good luck to each of them.
I hope each of you enjoyed your summer and are making plans for your Chamber involvement next year. But before that, we have our BIG event - A Taste of Encino. This year at A Taste of Encino you will see new and different things, including Food Trucks, a beer and wine area and much, much more. We anticipate the event this year to be one of our biggest and best ever and I hope to see all of your there.

A message from our C.E.O., Diana Duenas

Summer is over. At least for the thousands of kids that went back to school in August. There are only four more months of 2016... where did this year go? Well, we still have a lot more activities you can get involved with this year!
For instance, the
29th Annual A Taste of Encino. This wonderful, community event brings everything Encino has to offer in one place... Bringing Our Community Together. How can you participate in "Taste" you ask? You can still be a sponsor of the event, you can take a booth and showcase your business and of course, we can always use a few hours of your time that day to help us with all that goes in to an event of this magnitude. Just call the Chamber office, we'll help you get involved!
We also have the
Justice Armand Arabian Leaders in Public Service Awards Luncheon. This will be held on Thursday, October 27th at the Warner Center Marriott. This is the
MUST ATTEND luncheon of the year as over 350 community and business leaders attend to honor some of the best, most dedicated leaders in public service.
This is one of the most prestigious events in the Valley and one that I am very proud to be part of.
Finally, to wrap up the year, we will have our annual
Holiday Party hosted by Steve & Helen Ho of our local
McDonald's of Encino which
is transformed into a holiday wonderland with all of the generous toys & books that our members donate to local organizations that serve Valley children & their families who could use a little extra help during the holidays. Of course, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus is always highly anticipated by young and old (and those of us that aren't so old) alike. There is holiday music played throughout the evening with a special performance by one of the local school chorus's.
Of course, we have all of our monthly networking opportunities that you can attend.
Our
Monthly Marketing Mornings (Hank Yuloff of Promotionally Minded offers his expertise FREE to all members on topics like Social Media and Marketing 101), Our
Business & Professional Development Lunches (we have a lot of exciting guest speakers lined up), our
NetPlus Breakfasts, and our Valley Networking Alliance quarterly breakfasts and mixers,
To RSVP for any of these events, be a sponsor or just receive more information, please contact the Encino Chamber office (818) 789-4711.

Do you have a concussion? Let's ask the computer
by: Providence Medical Group
|
It may get easier for health care providers to detect concussions after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared a pair of computer-based tools intended to help measure a potentially injured person's memory, reaction time and processing speed.
The two tests-Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) and ImPACT Pediatric-are the first such medical tests approved for post-concussion testing, the agency said. The tests were developed by ImPACT Applications of Pittsburgh.
The products already are in wide use by schools, professional sports teams and clinics, but the FDA approval is "a huge step forward for the industry, for athletes and others who are at-risk of concussion-related injuries, as well as for licensed, trained medical professionals," said Michael Wahlster, ImPACT's CEO, in a prepared statement. The company said the FDA clearance validates the products' effectiveness.
An FDA official called the approved tests "a useful tool" to help physicians and nurses evaluate whether a patient has suffered a concussion.
He stressed that the ImPACT tests alone aren't enough to diagnose concussions, but can be a useful part of a provider's toolkit to assess potential head injuries.

BRUSH UP ON YOUR STREET SMARTS THIS FALL
Prepared by the Office of Transportation Safety
|
Are you aware that there is a crisis on our streets, and it involves pedestrians?
With more people out walking and more ways to be distracted, last year pedestrians accounted for a full one quarter of all traffic deaths. This month, the California Office
of Traffic Safety (OTS) is encouraging Californians of all ages to help reduce pedestrian related injuries by practicing safe behaviors at all times. OTS encourages you, whether
you are a driver or walker, to share and practice the following tips to ensure everyone
stays safe:
Pedestrians:
- Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road, cross at crosswalks or intersections only, and obey signs and signals. Walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible if there is no sidewalk.
- Pay attention to the traffic moving around you. This is not the time to be texting or talking on a cell phone.
- Look left, right, and left again and make eye contact with drivers as they approach. Never assume a driver sees you.
- Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials (or use a flashlight) at night.
Motorists:
- Look out for pedestrians, especially in hard-to-see conditions such as at night or in bad weather.
- Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk or intersection where pedestrians are likely to be.
- Stop before the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see and yield to the pedestrians, too.
For more information and safety tips, please visit the OTS Facebook page at facebook.com/CaliforniaOTS or the OTS website at
www.ots.ca.gov
