NFF Chalktalk - Aug. 30, 2016
The NFF announced that several members of its NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments, will take center stage during the 15th Annual Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum Dec. 7-8 in New York City at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square. The participation of the NFF National Scholar-Athletes is part of a partnership that began in 2013 between the Sports Business Daily/Global/Journal of the Street & Smith's Sports Group and the NFF to promote the Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.
2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Nominations End Wednesday
Nomination forms for the NFF's coveted National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments, have been sent to collegiate sports information directors. The deadline for submissions will be Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Eligible candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility; have a cumulative 3.2 GPA (undergrad); be a starter or significant contributor; and have outstanding leadership and citizenship. Official transcripts as well as a head shot and action photo of the nominee are required.

Each member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. One honoree will be selected as the winner of the NFF 
William V. Campbell Trophy , presented by Fidelity Investments, and will have his scholarship increased to $25,000. All members of the class will be honored guests at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on Dec. 6.

Defending national champion Alabama took the top spot in the Preseason FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll announced last week. Clemson, Oklahoma, Florida State and LSU round out the top five in the poll, in which voters rank the top 16 FBS teams.

The results of the poll will be released every Sunday of the 2016 season and the individual votes of all members will also be made public. The first poll will be released Sept. 6 (to account for Labor Day games), and the final poll will be released Dec. 4. The pollsters consist of FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers.
The NFF salutes and thanks its grassroots leaders, who serve as the chapter presidents of the organization's nationwide network of 120 outposts in 47 states with 12,000 members who fulfill the NFF's mission of Building Leaders Through Football.

Special Exhibit: Fans can continue to experience a limited-engagement exhibit at the Hall, delivered by UPS, "All-Star Saturdays: A Century of America's Best." The exhibit features artifacts from the East-West Shrine Game, the College All-Star Game and a h ost  of artifacts and memorabilia from historic all-star games. 

New Virtual Reality Exhibit: In conjunction with AT&T, the Hall announced it has completed the installation of the new AT&T Virtual Stadium, incorporating Samsung Gear VR and immersing f ans in the middle of all the action at more than 20 stadiums during some of the biggest rivalry games from each season.

The Blitz
NFF Board Member and College Football Hall of Famer Roger Staubach, who played one year at New Mexico Military Institute before going to Navy, was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame.

NFF Board Member and Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones officially opened the Cowboys' new headquarters and practice facility with a high school football quadruple-header on Aug. 27. All four games were sold out and were played in the Ford Center, the team's 12,000-seat indoor facility. 

College Football Hall of Famer Bobby Bell (Minnesota) and Hall of Fame coach Tommy Prothro will be inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Jan. 1. Former Southern California running back Ricky Ervins and award-winning sports writer Art Spander are also in the class.

Florida is  adding  College Football Hall of Fame player and 2017 Hall of Fame coach candidate Steve Spurrier's name to Florida Field. Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will be unveiled Sept. 3.

College Football Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder enters the 2016 season seven Kansas State victories away from reaching 200 wins in his career. He would be the 39th coach to reach that mark at one school.

College Football Hall of Famer, 2005 NFF Distinguished American Award recipient and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page has been named the 2016 recipient of the Notre Dame Monogram Club's Moose Krause Distinguished Service Award. He will be presented with the award the weekend of Oct. 28-29.

A new statue of College Football Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry will be  unveiled  to the public during this year's FRYfest celebration in Coralville, Iowa, on Sept. 2.

College Football Hall of Famer Mark May (Pittsburgh) and  Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz will host the 2016 Fiesta Bowl Kickoff Luncheon Aug. 31 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. Former Notre Dame defensive tackle Bertrand Berry will also take part in the event.

College Football Hall of Famer coach Lou Holtz will be  inducted  into the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor during the weekend of Sept. 1-3 in Fayetteville, Ark. Former Razorback football players Gregory Lasker and Danny Rhodes will also be inducted.

College Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green (Texas A&M-Kingsville) is joining George Mason University as an associate athletics director and special assistant to the athletics director.

West Virginia will retire No. 77 in honor of the late College Football Hall of Famer Bruce Bosley during its season opener against Missouri Sept. 3.

College Football Hall of Famer Keith Jackson (Oklahoma) will step down from his role as Arkansas' radio analyst after this season.

2015 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Jordan Italiano (Kent State) was named the male recipient of the MAC's 2016 Bob James Memorial Scholarship Award.

2011 NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award recipient Verne Lundquist begins his final season calling college football for CBS on Saturday with the UCLA-Texas A&M game at 3:30 p.m. ET. 

ESPN College GameDay , the 2006 recipient of the NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award, will kick off the 2016 season live from Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., on Saturday, Sept. 3, for the LSU-Wisconsin game.
Over The Middle
The Little Rock Touchdown Club/NFF Arkansas Chapter announced its 2016 lineup of speakers for the fall. Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema kicked off the series Aug. 22, and it continued Aug. 29 with former NFL coach and current ESPN broadcaster Herm Edwards. College Football Hall of Famer and 1996 Campbell Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel (Florida) will speak Sept. 6. Future speakers include Arkansas athletics director Jeff Long (Sept. 12), former Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel (Sept. 19), College Football Hall of Famer Brian Bosworth from Oklahoma (Sept. 26), former Arkansas quarterbacks Tyler Wilson and Casey Dick (Oct. 3), former Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer (Oct. 10), Arkansas State head coach Blake Anderson (Oct. 17), the Arkansas Razorback Southwest Conference Hall of Fame Class of 2016 (Oct. 24), Central Arkansas head coach Steve Campbell (Oct. 31), former Arkansas safety Ken Hamlin (Nov. 7), Texas athletics director and 1968 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Mike Perrin (Nov. 14) and former Notre Dame All-American and current CBS Sports analyst Aaron Taylor (Nov. 21). The chapter also announced that NFF Chairman, 2016 NFF Gold Medal recipient and College Football Hall of Famer Archie Manning (Mississippi) will speak at the club's postseason banquet in January.

The Nebraska Football Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by the NFF Nebraska Chapter , will hold its 2016 induction dinner  on the University of Nebraska campus on Sept. 9. The class will be introduced prior to Nebraska's game with Wyoming on Sept. 10. This year's class includes former Huskers Kris BrownAdam CarrikerScott Raridon and Dean Sukup and former Doane (Neb.) player Fred Davis.

The NFF Tom Lombardo/St. Louis Chapter will host its annual Paul Savage Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament on Sept. 11 at Columbia Golf Club in Columbia, Ill. Proceeds from the tournament go toward the chapter's scholarship program. The chapter will then host its first luncheon of the season Sept. 14 at Lombardo's-Airport restaurant longtime St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports writer Jim Thomas.

The NFF Valley of the Sun (Ariz.) Chapter and the Fiesta Bowl are partnering for the chapter's 25th Annual Scholar-Athlete TopGolf Tournament Sept. 23 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Since 1959, the National Football Foundation has annually recognized the best and brightest college players, presenting them with prestigious NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards, presented by Fidelity Investments. The $18,000 postgraduate scholarships are presented at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York City. 

Launched in 2008, the NFF Scholar-Athlete Alumni Association provides a powerful vehicle for past honorees to remain in the vanguard of the NFF's present efforts.
