Celebrate Happy Cat Month

Every cat deserves to be happy! Although the shelter can be stressful at times for cats, we try to keep them as happy as possible! Help us keep them happy by donating toys, either bought or homemade, and donating to our resident cats.

We also try to find homes for them where they can stay happy forever! Visit us during the month of September; we will be reducing the cat adoption fee for all of our cats and kittens. Adult cats will be $10 and Kittens will be $25.

Tay Hohoff said,  "There are few things in life more heartwarming than to be welcomed by a cat."
Responsible Dog Ownership Day!

Owning a pet is a privilege, but the benefits of pet ownership come with responsibilities. This is why September 17 is dedicated to Responsible Dog Ownership. From the commitment to the cost, they can require a lot of time, energy, and money!

Here are some great tips on what to expect if you are planning on getting a dog:

Billy Wants to Make Sure You and Your Furry Friends Stay Safe from Rabies!
September 28 is World Rabies Day

Billy is helping to spread the word about the dangers of rabies, how important it is to vaccinate and take the necessary precautions to prevent the spread.

Rabies is 100% preventable. In most cases, preventing rabies is as simple as ensuring adequate animal vaccination and control, avoiding contact with wild animals, and educating those at risk. Rabies is one of the most serious contagious diseases and tops the list of zoonotic diseases as it is nearly always fatal. The rabies vaccination is one of the most effective and affordable vaccines available for your pets. Raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats are the most likely to contract rabies, but ALL mammals are susceptible. Dogs, cats, and ferrets are required to have current rabies vaccines. Now that you know all of this, there is no reason for your pet not to be vaccinated for rabies. It's an affordable, easy vaccine that requires very little follow up.

The St. Mary's Animal Welfare League (SMAWL), in partnership with the St. Mary's County Health Department, offers low-cost rabies vaccinations, distemper vaccinations and microchipping to the public once a month.

Volunteer Help is Always Needed!

The shelter is in need of volunteers, age 14 years old and older, to assist with caring for the many animals in our facility. There are several volunteer duties offered, including walking shelter dogs, spending time with the cats, taking photos of adoptable pets, general housekeeping, washing dishes and toys, cleaning kennels, and assisting with laundry. You can volunteer as little or as much as you would like.

Volunteer paperwork must be completed and submitted in advance.

Can't come to the shelter but still want to help out?
Come out to our adoption days in the community. The shelter staff will have animals available for adoption at various locations throughout the month. Come help get an animal adopted! Give the shelter a call to see if we will be in a neighborhood near you!
Spay/Neuter Clinics

Tags and Licensing Are Required

Keep identification tags on your pet ... it could be your pets ticket to get back home. Both dogs and cats need ID. Be sure your animals wear a collar with an ID tag, a county license, and rabies tag. Also, don't forget to microchip your animal. Keep your personal information with the microchip company up to date. These identifiers could help your neighbor return your animal to you instead of taking him to the animal shelter.

Dogs in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary's Counties must have a county license. Cats in Charles and Calvert Counties also require a county license.

To obtain a pet license you must have a current rabies vaccine for your pet.
