Lizzie Borden and the 40 Whacks
Saturday September 24, 1 PM
We continue to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Rowley Free Public Library with an event that mesmerized the populace at that time - the horrific axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden. The Delvena Theatre Company will be presenting Lizzie Borden and the 40 Whacks at the Rowley Public Library, 141 Main Street, Rowley, on Saturday, September 24, at 1:00 PM. On a scorching hot day in Fall River, back in August of 1892, a heinous crime occurred. Spinster Lizzie Borden was accused, tried, and acquitted for the vicious ax murders of her father and stepmother. This true unsolved mystery has fascinated people for over 100 years. The performance includes a mock trial that invites the audience to participate by questioning Lizzie and deciding her guilt or innocence. Did she or didn't she? You be the judge! The Delvena Theatre Company has performed at various venues, most often at the Boston Center for the Arts, and has been nominated for five Independent Reviewers of New England awards.  Come early- seating is limited!
Historical Labor Posters on exhibit
Through September, the Rowley Public Library will be hosting "Workers' Struggles: An International Poster Exhibit," Coming on the heels of the Verizon strike, one of the largest strikes in the US in recent years, this exhibit gives a visual display of many of the struggles workers have encountered in trying to secure decent wages and working conditions. The posters are from a collection of more than 6300 owned by Stephen Lewis, himself a retired union leader and continuing activist. Collected from a number of countries, the posters display a range of graphic art styles and address many different issues. The posters are accompanied by placards that give the background on the poster and translate into English where necessary. This project is supported in part by IBEW Local 103, Roofers Local 33, and Asbestos Workers Local 6
