Column

While every day provides an opportunity to welcome parents to campus, the Lake Park school community especially prides itself on hosting Curriculum Night for our families. This week concluded two consecutive Wednesdays for staff to meet the parents of their students and make an important first impression by opening our campuses and classrooms.

We appreciated the engagement of over 850 parents who participated, and look forward to the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled on October 27-28. Look for more information about scheduling conferences to arrive in the mail later this month. These programs that focus on teaching and learning allow our team to continue building relationships with Lancer families and dialoguing about student achievement.

My new role as Lake Park's Principal affords me a unique perspective to interact daily with students, staff, parents, alumni and community members. I have worked at Lake Park for 20 years, and am grateful for this rewarding experience to serve all of our stakeholders.

In the previous LP Link edition, Superintendent Dr. Lynne Panega shared highlights from opening day and communicated Lake Park's "We Are One" commitment - one school, one staff, one mission. The first few weeks of the 2016-17 school year have shown me how our school embraces this "future forward" focus.

From the successful launch of the 1:1 instructional technology initiative to 450 students pre-registered for the 2nd Annual "Make a Difference Day" on October 1, Lancer Nation has already proven to be academically-engaged, service-oriented, philanthropically-motivated and ready to leave a legacy.

Each month, I look forward to contributing to the LP Link and sharing with you a campus perspective that highlights the stories and successes of our Lancers. I encourage you to please introduce yourself to me if you are on campus or contact me with any questions or feedback.

The school year is off to a tremendous start, and I look forward to the momentum we can build together with a common goal: We Are Lake Park. We Are One!

Fighting Childhood Cancer, One Cup at a Time
Lake Park High School reading specialist Kim LeRette Lewis and her students recently read an article about Alex's Lemonade Stand. Having lost a family member to cancer, Kim personally understands the devastation it causes. She and her students believe that Alex's Lemonade Foundation is a worthy cause to support, and look forward to making a difference in the fight against childhood cancers.

Founder Alexandra "Alex" Scott developed the mission: to find cures for all children battling cancer.  It all started with one front yard lemonade stand.

When she was just four years old, Alex held her first childhood cancer fundraiser in her front yard and raised over $2,000. By the time of her death in 2004, Alex had raised $1 million and inspired a legacy of hope and cures for childhood cancer. Watch a video that documents her inspirational journey.

To assist in Alex's life's work,  Lake Park will host a lemonade stand at East Campus from September 19-23 during lunch periods in the cafeteria. Additionally, paper lemons can be purchased in memory/honor of someone who has fought or is fighting cancer for a dollar. Donations can also be made directly to the foundation by visiting the Lake Park team page.
Understanding the College Financial Aid Process
The Lake Park High School counseling department will host an important presentation about the college application on Thursday, September 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the West Campus Auditorium.

A guest speaker from the Illinois Student Assistant Commission will present information about the financial aid process. Beginning with the 2017-18 financial aid application cycle, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available on October 1 of the year before the upcoming award year. Therefore, FAFSA filing for 2017-18 will begin on October 1, 2016. Please note this is a significant change from previous years when the FAFSA was available to families on January 1.

Boosters Shoe Drive Creates Local and National Benefits
Join in the Lake Park Athletic Boosters shoe drive by donating your gently used sneakers at drop-off locations on campus and in the community through Friday, September 30. T he shoes will help support the Boosters program (collecting $0.70 per pound) as well as individuals in developing nations like Ghana, Haiti and Bolivia.

Did you know that  600 million pairs of shoes go into America's landfills? The majority of the shoes can still be worn. The shoes collected by the Boosters will be kept from landfills, help others in developing countries start micro-businesses that can create a sustainable income for their families, and raise funds for Lake Park. The  goal is to collect 2500 pounds, which equals 166 shoe bags containing 15 pairs each. Learn the location of collection boxes in the communities of Roselle, Bloomingdale, Itasca, Medinah and Hanover Park.
1:1 Chromebook Initiative Seeks Freshman Parent Input
Lake Park High School officially launched a 1:1 instructional technology initiative for the Class of 2020 for the 2016-17 school year. All incoming freshmen received a Chromebook, a laptop-like computing device, to support and enhance their educational experience.

Year I of the Chromebook program is off to a great start! Students and teachers are using the devices to learn both in and out of the classroom. As part of the district's continuous improvement  efforts, Lake Park is interested in hearing from parents/guardians of the Class of 2020 how the Chromebook program is working for your student. Please take this short, five-question survey to provide feedback to help promote great teaching and learning.

Freshman families are strongly encouraged to purchase insurance for the Chromebook to cover potential loss or damage. Note the following points:
* Insurance is optional. The cost to enroll is $30.00. The deductible is $30.00 for each incident, including loss or theft.
* Lake Park is partnering with one2one Risk Solutionsa third-party vendor, to offer insurance to families.
* Billing will take place through their website, a portal separate from the District.
* Chromebook device repairs will take place in-house.
*  Read more information  and instructions for registering.
