  Welcome Fall!
Reaping the Harvest
Please join us in greeting the beautiful Fall season. Fall is the seasonal cycle when the summer growth bears and scatters its fruit. It's a good time to reflect on what efforts and dreams are manifesting and coming to fruition in your life. What is the harvest of your efforts? It's also a good time to reflect on the cycle of life and death, as some things die back and new life is born. Take time to enjoy the beauty of the season and experience the inspiration, peace and calm that results from connecting to nature.

It's been just two years since Mindfully Well Center opened it's doors for the first time at a Labor Day Open House. Check out this newsletter and our newly updated website to see the "harvests" available to you. The Mindfully Well Center is the dream of Dr. Rose Mary Shaw, Neuro-psychologist, to create a holistic center which addresses mind, body and spiritual health, based on the ancient health system of Ayurveda. Yoga as Therapy
Today, Yoga is often included as part of a person's individual heath strategy or therapeutic treatment plan, addressing a variety of health issues or concerns from weight loss to chronic pain or disease to mental health issues. Your physician or mental health counselor may recommend yoga. Now, private sessions as well as Yoga classes are available at the Mindfully Well Center.

Private Yoga Sessions
Have you ever wanted to attend a Yoga class, but not felt comfortable being in a group class due to special needs or conditions? Have you or a loved one experienced physical trauma so disabling you could not function in a regular class? Or emotional or mental trauma severe enough to leave you with paralyzing anxiety or depression? Whatever physical or mental condition you find yourself in, let us suggest adding yoga to your personal treatment plan. If an ongoing class does not work for you, try private yoga sessions with our yoga teachers.

In a private session the wisdom of  yoga can be adapted to whatever is needed to help you move into a better state of health and well-being, using a variety of tried and true techniques that might include recommendations from Ayurveda, modified yoga postures tailored to the needs of your body, guided imagery, yoga nidra, breathing practices, and meditation.

Katrina Oost, now on staff at Mindfully Well Center, is certified as a Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Therapist. Due to her own life-long struggle with severe anxiety and depression, she comes to this work with a profound understanding of what it means to feel vulnerable, unsafe and unable to cope.  "I get it," says Katrina.  Yoga therapy has helped her tremendously.  "It's almost a miracle!"

Katrina shares what happens in her Yoga Therapy Sessions. To find out more...

YOGA WORKSHOP
Yoga and a Walk in the Woods

Did you know that researchers now confirm what we have always suspected-that being in nature is actually good for your brain?  The therapeutic effects of a walk in the woods include increased attention span, better memory, reduced stress, greater creativity and improved moods. In addition, Japanese researchers have found lowered blood pressure and heart rate and improved immune function.
Join us for a yoga session at the mindfully well center focusing on nature elements which also correspond to our chakras or energy centers- Earth, Water,  Fire, Air and Space-using  yoga movements, breathing and mudras (hand gestures) which evoke the qualities of these elements.

After opening to nature, we will go on an optional hike at Glen Helen, providing an opportunity to relate to and absorb these nature elements.

When:  Sunday, October 9, 1:30-3:00 pm, (Yoga Session), 3:00-4:00 (optional hike--weather permitting).
Cost: $12. Reservations required.

Wishing you a bountiful harvest of Gratitude
From Jean Farkas:
I always end my yoga classes with a gratitude meditation, one of the surest ways of bringing inner peace and calm, but I didn't to this with my classes taught at the homeless shelter for women. I didn't feel comfortable because I worried that they had nothing to be thankful for.  A few years ago, during my Thanksgiving reflections, it occurred to me how wrong this was. Gratitude is a spiritual practice for all, not just theose with comfortable lives.  My co-teacher, Jenny Berman and I discussed this and began to start each class with an opportunity for the students to say what they are grateful for.  The response was amazing.  If they had no home, they were grateful for the shelter's roof over their heads; if they had no relationship, they were glad to have gotten out of a bad one; they were grateful for being clean of drugs or alcohol; they were grateful for small kindnesses.  It went on and on. Jenny, who is a social work professor, and I wrote an article published in Reflections, a social work e-magazine.  Read more...

Here's a simple, effective Gratitude Meditation
1.  Sit quietly and breathe in and out of the heart center
2.  Focus your mind on something you are grateful for
3.  Hold this focus for 5-10 minutes or more
