Happy September neighbors!
Like some of you, our month started with kids heading back to school and starting their new adventures. It's a beautiful site to see all of the neighborhood children walking and biking through our communities.
Council has been very busy as well. We are still in the budget hearing process and hope to vote on the final 2017 budget at the council meeting on September 13. Some of the biggest budget items include adding more police officers, restoring Engine 8, paving streets, adding more Sunday library hours and funding a 6th week for the Long Beach Municipal Band. If you have not already done so, please take a moment to complete the City's budget survey.
City Budget Priority Survey
We have received a lot of calls and emails regarding homelessness and the rise in property crimes. As most of you know, we held a meeting on July 27 to focus on bike thefts and homelessness. We had over 150 residents in attendance. It was a productive meeting because we were able to discuss what the City is currently doing to address these concerns and share some of the plans for the future. We were also able to hear suggestions and ideas from the residents, some of them resulting in legislative proposals that our staff is currently working on and planning to bring to the full Council on September 20th.
We are hosting another community meeting to talk about homelessness and theft. We plan on having the Police Chief, the City Prosecutor, the Health Department and the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department present to answer question and hear your concerns. The meeting will be on
Saturday, September 17 at 2 PM at Fire Station 14 (5200 Eliot Ave.)
Finally, I hope you can make it to our Mid-Term Review on
Sunday, September 25 at 5 PM at the Long Beach Museum of Art. There will be free parking at the Junipero beach parking lot. This is a free, family friendly event. The museum staff will be giving tours to children while the parents enjoy our presentation on the projects and events that my team and I have completed in the past two years, as well as our priorities for the second half of my term. District Sunset Harbor Tour of the Port of Long Beach with Councilwoman Suzie Price
Our Third District Community meeting this month will be a Harbor Tour
sponsored by the Port of Long Beach.
The Harbor Tour is a great way for residents to learn about the Port's environmental, security, infrastructure and community projects. View port operations first-hand and hear interesting facts about the greenest port in the world and largest port complex in the United States.
If you would like to joins us on Thursday, September 29, 6 PM- 8 PM please email the Third District Office, [email protected] with SUBJECT LINE: Port Harbor Tour or call our Office at (562) 570-6300. You must reserve your seat since space is limited.
LOGISTICS:
Tours departs from Dock 2 (adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific) at 6:00 PM, so plan on arriving no later than 5:45 PM. Children are welcome to accompany their parents on the tour. Parking is validated for up to 3 hours for guests parking in the Aquarium parking structure. The Port's vessel is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act to accommodate all residents. Beverages and light appetizers are provided on-board. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket.

Community Meeting on Homelessness - September 17
Everyday we see the effects of the increases in homelessness. They are sleeping on the beach, they are panhandling outside of stores, and they are going through trash cans. Cities nationwide are grappling with this problem, and we want to be working together with residents as we continue developing solutions to this pressing issue.
My office receives many calls and emails regarding homelessness and the rise in property crimes and want to know what the city and community can do to confront this growing problem.
 As homelessness continues to be a problem in Long Beach and throughout the state my office will be hosting another community meeting to talk about homelessness and theft on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 PM at Fire Station 14 (5200 E Eliot St.). We will have the Police Chief, the City Prosecutor, the Health Department, the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department, and Public Works present to answer question and discuss the homelessness plan as well as enforcement efforts, and priorities for addressing issues of homelessness and crime in our community. With the number of city departments represented we are sure this will be a positive meeting for everyone who attends and will be solutions oriented as it is important for us to be focused on addressing the problems we are seeing.

Greenbelt Heights Greenbelt Project Opening
Please join Councilwoman Suzie Price and Mayor Garcia at the Greenbelt Heights Greenbelt Project Opening on
Saturday, September 10 at 4:30 PM. This event is in conjunction with Greenbelt Fest which is being hosted by the Greenbelt Heights Neighborhood Association.
 The festivities will take place on the Pacific Electric Right of Way (Greenbelt) between Roswell and E. 7th & E. 8th Streets. Local band, Dad Company will perform at this family friendly event with a food truck to satisfy your barbecue cravings!

"Some Enchanted Bluff Park Evening" Brings Island Flair to Benefit Historic Lamppost Project
Bluff Park Neighborhood Association (BPNA) will host an exclusive fundraising benefit
 on
September 17 for its Historic Lamppost Project with the vision of "bringing lamppost history back" to Bluff Park Historic District.
Third District Councilwoman Suzie Price has offered her enthusiastic and generous support, saying "Historic neighborhoods build community pride by bringing residents together for a common purpose."
East 1st Street is currently the only street in the District to have vintage lampposts that were installed around 1927. Soon thereafter, more lampposts were planned and installed in the area.
Now the Project's goal is to remove the modern, uncharacteristic "cobra" street lights and install replicas of the East 1st Street lampposts, which will remain intact and be the model for the replicas, still being made by the original manufacturer. The Project will phased over many years; the pilot phase should be completed next year.
On
Saturday, September 17, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM, "Some Enchanted Bluff Park Evening" will enchant donors with music and song from the South Pacific, featuring local musical talents Owen Lovejoy and Sara Cooper. Crème de la Crème will cater the gourmet, island-inspired food and hosted drinks.
The homeowners of a 1920's "Hollywood Regency" style historic home in Bluff Park will host the event, offering a unique and luxurious experience and an alluring surprise when donors find out the home's address.

As part of Councilwoman Price's commitment to the small business community, she is hosting her 2nd Annual Small Business Workshop on
Tuesday, September 27 at 6 PM. The workshop will once again take place at The Gaslamp Restaurant (6251 E. Pacific Coast Hwy). Our featured speaker is Kenneth Bator, local 3rd District resident, and founder of Bator Training & Consulting, Inc.
Bator has over 20 years of experience in helping organizations reach new levels of effectiveness. Over his career as a management, branding, culture building, and strategy expert, he has served as an executive of three different financial institutions throughout the country and has assisted many small to medium-sized businesses achieve goals they had never met before.

City Council Updates
City Council Meetings are held every Tuesday evening, with the exception of the last Tuesday of the month when council is "dark." Meetings are held in City Hall - Council Chambers (333 W. Ocean Blvd.) at approximately 5pm. Times do change, so please check with our office or website for exact times. City Council meetings are open to the public and we encourage your attendance, especially if there is an important topic up for discussion.

Still having challenges with Frontier?
Why is the decision of having new cable providers fall into the hands of the State, not the City?
The Digital Infrastructure and Video Competition Act of 2006 (DIVCA) establishes the State Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) as the Cable Franchising authority for new Video / Cable service providers, but delegates certain responsibilities to local municipalities. For example, the local municipality (The City's Video Communications Division) will take cable complaints from residents and expedite a solution for the resident's complaint, by notifying the Government cable liaison with the cable provider. However, if the resident still isn't satisfied with the outcome, they can reach out to the State (CPUC) to place a complaint.

Senior Citizen Advisory Commission has openings
The Senior Citizen Advisory Commission advises the Mayor and City Council on the concerns of senior citizens and recommends appropriate action to be taken to provide needed services. This City Council office is pleased to say there are openings for new members. Electric Lawn Mower Exchange Program
The Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is giving us an opportunity to save money on gas and decrease emissions in our communities. On
September 17 at Veterans Stadium they are hosting an electric lawn mower exchange program. You can trade in your old gas-powered lawn mower and replace it with a high performance battery-electric lawn mower. There are several cordless models to choose from, and
very quiet. Quantities are limited, so you must pre-register for one of the 5 upcoming exchange events.

27th Annual Belmont Shore Car Show
Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016 with A Memorial Ceremony
9am to 3pm
The Long Beach Fire Department will join Mayor Robert Garcia and the Long Beach Police Department to remember those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Due to the decommissioning of the PD/FD Memorial at the foot of Chestnut Avenue, this year's ceremony will be held at Fire Station 8, located at 5365 E. 2nd Street, in Belmont Shore.
The brief memorial ceremony will begin at approximately 9:00 AM. The Police and Fire Chiefs will then place a memorial wreath in the front of the Fire Station and Mayor Garcia will call for a moment of silence at 0911 hours in remembrance of all the firefighters, police officers, and innocent civilians who died on that fateful day. The ceremony will conclude shortly after that. A large piece of the World Trade Center will also be on display in front of Station 8 for the ceremony and throughout the day.

East Second Street from Livingstone to Bay Shore and intersecting side streets from Quincy Avenue to Claremont Avenue will be closed to traffic from 5:00AM to 5:00PM or until 2nd Street is cleared to open. Bayshore Ave will be open to traffic.
