Women's Number One Health Problem: Heart Disease

And what you can do about it

You have probably heard that heart disease is common among women. It can still be shocking to hear that 29% of women die from heart disease. Heart disease can run in the family but can also be influenced by other factors. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, and diabetes. The good news is that heart disease is largely preventable through lifestyle choices. The American Heart Association and Go Red for Women have identified 7 ways that women can control their risk factors for heart disease. Click here to make a personal "Go Red" plan and see their other tips for living a healthy life.

Remember that Ladies First can offer lifestyle programs to help you stay physically active and/or lose weight. See the full lists of lifestyle programs and fitness centers. There may be one in your area!

Exercising to Relieve Stress
The Fall can be a hectic time of the year. Whether you are sending your kids back to school, going back to school yourself, or getting ready for the Vermont winter, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and short on time. The first thing we often cut out of our lives is exercise. While it might be hard to fit into your schedule, exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are your body's natural pain killers. Exercises like running, cycling, and lifting weights allow you to get into a rhythm. The rhythmic flow can help relax your mind and clear your head. As a bonus, exercise helps you sleep better at night. Better sleep can lead to a clearer mind and a refreshed feeling the next day.
