Trail Notes ...

Practicing Love with our Wealth

What would you do if you were really rich?
Jesus tells a story of extremes: an extravagantly rich man (known as Dives) and an extremely poor man, Lazarus. The wealthy man Dives luxuriates at his table of delectables, while Lazarus lies hungry and dying right outside.  They both die, and Lazarus goes to a good life in heaven, while Dives burns in hell.

So is this parable a critique and condemnation of all wealth?  Is it better to be poor in this life, so that we can be comfortable in heaven after death?  I believe the answer to both questions is no. What this story is really about is compassion, loving our neighbor - whoever stand in front of us, whoever is in need. Dives goes to hell not because he is rich, but because he is unfeeling, unloving. He lacks compassion.

It's easy to talk about the extremely wealthy in the third person. But here at St. Dunstan's, most of us are very comfortable indeed. So our question is:  What will we do, since we are quite rich?

How do we practice love with what God has given us? How do we share what we have - food, time, money, expertise? Can we cut down on restaurants, and support a soup kitchen instead? Can we help at a health clinic or legal clinic for poor people? Can we volunteer as a counselor to people trying to get a job? All of these are ways to practice love, or in the Greek, agape.

Brother Curtis Almquist, Episcopal monk in Cambridge, Massachusetts, speaks of the delight we can experience when we practice love, or agape.

To love, in the sense of agape, is to participate in God's generosity of love, to treat another person not with any preference for our own good but as an equal. Practice taking delight in the happiness of others, rather than feeling threatened or diminished, as if someone else's happiness could take something away from us.

Small Groups ...

Soul Sisters will meet on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.

We are going to launch into fall with a special session of Soul Sisters, focusing on the topic of what women can do to free our society of Gun violence. We'll have a presentation from Christine Zebrowski Tatelebaum about the "Patchwork for Peace" project.

Economic Justice Group will meet on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Creation Season ...

Creation Season is coming  -
5 Sundays in October

As is our custom, we celebrate God as Creator of all each Fall in our liturgies through special texts, music, and sermons. We want to bring visual interest to the church with works of art related to creation, nature, and God's creatures, including human beings. Artists in the church are invited to hang your art on the church walls (beneath the windows) to enhance our worship.  Contact Jeff or Rosi Sweeney for details.

A tableau will also be created in the rear of the church, based on themes in the liturgies. Take a look!

The New York Times (Nicholas Kristoff, Sunday, September 4 edition) ran an article on the kind of religion Jesus would practice.  The author Brian McLaren asked, "Could Christians migrate from defining their faith as a system of beliefs to expressing it as a loving way of life?"

St. Dunstan's is well on our way to doing just that:  Love Practiced Here.

Special Presentation ...

Patchwork for Peace

Are you concerned about gun violence? Wondering what you can do?  Learn about Patchwork For Peace, a new project to create a patchwork quilt in memory of victims of gun violence. Our goal is to display the Patchwork on the National Mall and other locations to illustrate the scope and toll of gun violence in American life.  Please join a discussion about Patchwork for Peace on Sunday September 25 at 10:15 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Or check out our website (a work in progress) at wwwpatchwork4peace.org.   No sewing required!

This is a special project of Christine Tatelbaum. Christine is a member of St. Dunstan's along with her husband Mark and their children Ryan, Kyle and Amelia. They usually attend the 9:00 liturgy. Christine will tell the story of how this projecct came to be and how you could be involved.

The presentation will begin following the making of sandwiches for Martha's Table.
Adult Formation ...

"Episcopal FAQ" with the Rector continues ...
  • What if I don't really believe in the bodily resurrection of Jesus?
  • What does the Episcopal Church say about capital punishment, or abortion, or gun safety, or fish on Fridays?
  • Is Advent supposed to be penitent, or joyful? (And is it purple, or blue?)
  • What does it mean when people cross themselves over their chests?
  • Why do we talk so much about death in our liturgies?
  • Does it matter if I pray to God, or to Jesus, or to the Spirit?
Jeff is continuing to take your questions by email or you can write them on the board in Founders' Hall. The first Sunday in October 10/2, November 11/6 and December 12/4 with an added week on 11/20. No question is too silly, deep, simple or complex. We talked about Mary and why we are called an Episcopal Church during the first session. Get your coffee and join the circle.

This year's Children's Teaching Team

One of my favorite things to teach children is: God is Good All the Time! All the Time God is Good! And this week we had a couple step forward to join the team. Thank you Frank and Ellen McCormick for joining Bethany Bentley, Sarah Hayman and Dawn Adair and Frank Johnson. God is Good All the Time!

Children's Formation Programs

Be sure to check out the great murals of JESUS that now decorate the Parish Hall wall. There are some great images on these - but the most significant one for me is that Jesus is smiling in both - Love Practiced Here.

This week, Sunday, September 25 we make sandwiches for Martha's Table. Come and give your children an opportunity to get hands-on experience of serving those in need. Can your family deliver the food this week? Another good learning experience - email Sue if you want to help in this special way.

In October we will take up the topic of Prayer. Learning how to pray, learning The Lord's Prayer, and creating things to help us in our prayers at home. Be sure to bring the children on Sunday, October 2, 16 and 23. More resources will be available for parents to use at home.

Register your children here .

Lifelong Christian Formation ...

Wondering what will happen in formation next?
Are you someone who likes to vision and dream?

A Formation Visioning Team is beginning at St. Dunstan's to wonder and vision for our future formation programs and offerings. This is not a doing group, but a group who will meet monthly for a time to ponder the future and then on a quarterly basis to continue the visioning and goal setting for adults, youth and children.

So if you are someone who would like to delve into the Word, listen for what God might be saying to us, and then think about how that would be lived out in our parish; this is for you.  Email or talk with Sue!

Monthly Taizé Services Resume on September 29, 8:30PM
On the last Thursday of most months (during the regular program year, except December), we'll have a Compline service in the style of Taizé. Our first Taizé service of the season is next Thursday, Sept. 29, from 8:30-9:00pm. Please let Michael, Jeff, or Sue if you're interested in helping to set up for this service, to play an instrument, or lead in any way.

Welcome Arianne Banda - one of our new Choral Scholars

We are very pleased to welcome Arianne Banda as one of our new Choral Scholars for 2016-2017.
Arianne is a junior at Walt Whitman High School and is currently active in various musical and arts activities. She is avidly involved in Whitman's theater program which she is a cast member of in this season's musical of Jesus Christ Superstar. In school she is in two upper level choirs: Women's Chorus and, by audition only, Chamber Choir. She is very excited to be participating in St. Dunstan's Church choir!

We also welcome back returning section leader John Blakeslee and choral scholar Katie Carroll. While we are well on our way to funding this year's paid singers, we could still use some help. Please talk to Jeff or Michael  if you can support the choir financially.
