Millington joins CrimeStoppers
in effort to catch more criminals
CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County welcomed Millington into the program this month, bringing a renewed focus on citizen help in crime fighting in the municipality nine miles north of Memphis.
The 10,000 residents of the city will be encouraged to call any tips on crime to the anonymous CrimeStoppers tips line, 528-CASH (2274).
Millington, the home of Naval Support Activity Mid-South, the Memphis International Raceway, and the International Goat Days Festival, moved under the umbrella of CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County as city officials recognized the efficiencies of joining forces.
Millington Police officials and the Memphis Police Department's Real Time Crime Center have worked out logistics for responding to tips to CrimeStoppers that come in from Millington citizens. First annual
CrimeStoppers invitational
golf tournament set for 2017
Members of the Board of Directors of CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County announced that an inaugural invitational golf tournament benefitting CrimeStoppers will be held at TPC Southwind next August.
The fundraiser will take place on Monday, August 7, 2017 at the private golf course that is the home of the PGA Tour's FedEx St. Jude Classic.
The tournament is the brainchild of board member Gary Paulson. His idea was enthusiastically received by the full board and by Executive Director Buddy Chapman. Board members will secure sponsorships and participants.
CrimeStoppers, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that receives no taxpayer monies, relies on contributions to do its vital work. In 2015, 380 individuals were arrested as the result of citizen tips to CrimeStoppers. Tips and cases solved have seen an increase this year.
The tournament's slogan will be "Play where the pros play and help fight crime."

Posting of special awards
can help solve toughest cases
Awards over and above regular CrimeStoppers awards - the maximum that normally can be paid is $1,000 - sometimes are offered by individuals and groups who want to help solve particular incidents of crime.
A case in point: An extraordinary award of $11,000 is offered in a cold case that is 27 years old. Authorities have reason to believe someone has information that can help solve the crime in
which 32-year-old Nancy Little was found murdered in her car in 1989.
In July a $13,500 award was paid to a citizen who provide the tip that led to an arrest in the murder of Lonnie Ludvigson, who was traveling through Memphis on business. The Ludvigson family expressed its appreciation to CrimeStoppers for its attention to the slaying, and to the anonymous tipster who had critical information and decided
to make the call.

CopperStoppers was created by CrimeStoppers in collaboration with businesses to fight the theft of and illegal sales, purchases and transportation out of town of copper and other scrap metals.
 Copper stripped from wiring, appliances, plumbing or electrical boxes may bring hundreds of dollars when sold, but often results in thousands of dollars in damages to homes, apartments, churches and other facilities.
Special awards up to $1,000 are available for information leading to arrests.

latest 'hot case'
The shooting of a guard during a robbery at a SunTrust bank became a CrimeStoppers "hot case" this month.
Various unsolved crimes that need citizen help to solve are featured as one of these cases now and then on the

Tracking
tips and arrests
Data for the 2016 fiscal year (FY), ending June 30, 2016, show how effective CrimeStoppers' tip line has been. Month after month we saw increases in the number of tips and in arrests made with the assistance of citizens in our community.
Compared with the previous year, tip volume was up 11.9%, with a total of 2887 tips received.
Felony arrests were up 20.5%, totaling 394 arrests related to tips received through the anonymous tip line.
The 372 successful tips represented a 26.5% increase over the previous year.
