King of Prussia Rail Coalition
How The Coalition Is Connecting With The Community
& Area Universities

No summer break for the King of Prussia Rail Coalition (Coalition). The Coalition, a collection of transportation management, planning and government agencies commercial property owners and residents, has been busy gathering information and comments from various stakeholders throughout the King of Prussia community this summer.

BUILDING HOMETOWN AWARENESS & SUPPORT
While waiting for SEPTA to finalize the Draft Environmental Impact Study ( set to be released at the end of this year), the Coalition continues to gather additional information and support for the project. The Coalition is working on an outreach video highlighting the project and all of its benefits, along with information sharing on social media.

BENEFITS FOR SURROUNDING SCHOOLS, STUDENTS AND COMPANIES
A benefit, and resource mentioned but not itemized, in the Economic Impact Study includes better access to 10 universities and colleges located right on the Norristown High Speed Line's existing route. These institutions offer a range of academic, recreational, and career training programs, along with job opportunities needed for teaching and staffing these campus communities. The proposed rail extension will make it easier to get to school and access the talent pool needed for the growing business community in King of Prussia. The Coalition is currently working with these colleges and universities to garner additional support for the project.

Carlotta Daniels-Randolph, Executive Director of Student Employment Services at Delaware County Community College, relates the dilemma facing students forced to decline positions in King of Prussia.  "While many of our graduates have their own transportation and have jobs in the King of Prussia District, so many others, particularly students seeking internships cannot access these opportunities. We wholeheartedly support the extension of the NHSL into King of Prussia."

Landscape Enhancement Projects Continue On Major KOP Roadways
I-76 Landscaped Median Project Completed

Transforming public spaces to create a sense of place and pride is a priority of KOP-BID. With over $1M of landscaping enhancements already implemented throughout KOP (see the projects here >>), KOP-BID continues to enhance the physical aesthetic in KOP with its latest project.

I-76 LANDSCAPE
In August 2016, KOP-BID began the transformation of another unattractive median, this time at the major highway interchange/entrance to KOP between Route 76 and Route 202. Nearly 1,000 linear feet of median on the Schuylkill Expressway was landscaped with beautiful and sustainable vegetation, including: amsonia; aronia; purple coneflower; Russian sage; feather reed grass; fragrant sumac; and black-eyed Susan.

Completed in mid-September 2016, this project is now a beautiful welcome for those traveling along the Schuylkill Expressway westbound toward KOP.

* Project Cost: $161,000 (funded by commercial assessment fees)
* Project Timeline: Plantings begin September 2016
* Project Area: Over 22,000 SF of planting and rockscape
* Project Plantings: 500 cubic yards of topsoil and more than a dozen types of flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, shrubs and landscaping stones.

The project Landscape Architect is ThinkGreen, LLC, Engineer is Hunt Engineering and Contractor is All Seasons Landscaping.
theconnector Shuttle Continues to Adjust to Changing SEPTA Schedule
New Pick Up Added to Wayne AM Schedule

The disruption to SEPTA's Regional Rail service this summer has certainly been difficult but the
dedicated drivers of theconnector shuttle service have been there to greet passengers at the Norristown Transportation Center and Wayne Station to make the last leg of their morning commute as smooth as possible.

theconnector will continue to adjust its schedule when necessary to meet the revised Regional Rail timetable. Currently, the shuttle service leaves the Wayne Station 5 minutes after the outbound Regional Train arrives in the morning rush but theconnector schedule remains the same for Norristown Transportation Center to meet the needs of passengers coming off both the Regional Rail and High Speed Line. The afternoon service for both the Wayne and Norristown routes follows the existing schedule.

Effectively immediately, theconnector released a new schedule that now includes an earlier outbound train pick up at both Norristown Transportation Center and Wayne Station. The trains were added by SEPTA in an effort to get back to their normal capacity.

Sullivan's Bridge Opening
Unites Landmarks at Valley Forge National Historical Park

King of Prussia and surrounding communities celebrated the opening of Sullivan's Bridge on August 19. This new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Schuylkill River re-established an important link between two of the region's most popular landmarks: Valley Forge National Historical Park and the Schuylkill River Trail.

Named the "Best Urban Trail in the U.S." by USA Today, the Schuylkill River Trail makes it possible for pedestrians and bicyclists to journey to and from Philadelphia on a dedicated recreational route. Now that same group can safely venture across the river to another incredible recreational and historical resource, Valley Forge National Historical Park. The National Park Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation hosted the exciting opening of the $9.2M bridge, named after American patriot Major John Sullivan who is credited with building a bridge over the Schuylkill River for General Washington in 1777.
