Proposed Legislation on Homeless Encampment Sweeps

Last week, the City Council introduced legislation that would dramatically change how the City manages encampments on public property. After evaluating this legislation, the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce has joined a coalition of business and neighborhood organizations to call upon the city to pass real reform to address the homelessness crisis in our city, rather than band-aid solutions that could pose significant negative impacts to small businesses, residents, employees, public space advocates and visitors to our city.

Take a moment to read this guest column written by public space, neighborhood and business leaders in response to this legislation.

We want to be a part of an effective and compassionate solution, to support and participate in efforts to alleviate the very real issues around homelessness, and we will continue to share our concerns with the City Council.

Please take a few moments to consider the impacts that this proposed legislation will have to your business or property, and voice your concerns by phone or email to  City Councilmembers.

Nighttime Outreach Planned for mid-September

The Capitol Hill MID Outreach Team partners with the community to address the reality that is homelessness and serves the community at large by responding to concerns and requests for assistance.  Since January, outreach workers have built strong working relationships with the East Precinct Police Department, community members, and business owners in Capitol Hill.

The team is coordinating with SPD to conduct nighttime outreach this month.
If you have noticed any nighttime camping, individuals in distress or illicit behavior, please contact the the Capitol Hill MID team  (206) 441-3300 or

Seattle Central College 50th Anniversary Celebration

Community-focused event on Sept. 22 to honor the college's history of activism.
For 50 years, Seattle Central College has played a pivotal role in shaping Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood and the city at large. Since its founding in 1966, Seattle Central students, faculty and staff have been vocal advocates for social change, both on campus and in broader movements. The campus has also served as a gathering place for community demonstrations throughout the years.

To recognize this important and unique history of social activism, the college is holding a special celebration on  September 22nd at 10:20AM.   The event will follow the annual President's Day event for faculty and staff. This community celebration will feature:
  • A march on campus starting at Broadway & Pine
  • Stations highlighting the college's connection to social movements by decade
  • A reopening of Seattle Central College for the next 50 years
  • An opportunity to tell your Seattle Central story through interactive activities
This is part of a series of celebratory events that Seattle Central has organized to  commemorate its 50th anniversary, to be held  throughout the 2016-17 academic year.
