Ochs Leaves MSU Extension
It is with mixed emotions that I announce that I am leaving my position to stay at home with my son, Jude. I have enjoyed working with Macomb County
4-H and am sad to leave, but the newest member of my family has stolen all of my attention. I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to be such a big part of his everyday life. Since joining the 4-H staff, I have been amazed by all of the

opportunities for 4-H'ers that are made possible by so many dedicated volunteers. I am confident that Macomb County 4-H will continue "to make the best better!"

Volunteer Selection Process and Enrollment
All adult volunteers are required to complete the 4-H Volunteer Selection Process (VSP) before enrolling online. VSP consists of an application, criminal history check, online training, reference check and an interview.
Don't let your volunteer status lapse! Once a volunteer has completed VSP, he or she must enroll online annually to maintain his or her 4-H screened volunteer status. Volunteers whose enrollments lapse will need to repeat VSP.

School Gardens: The New "In" Thing for Schools
School gardens are making headlines as they become the new 'in" thing for schools.
While school gardens were once thought of as an "extra" busy activity and only for schools in warm climates, today they are in the mainstream, as
research is demonstrating that, among other things:
- Schools are using gardens in creative ways to improve academic test scores in science, math, social studies and art (http://bit.ly/1VSOrF5).
- Other benefits that school gardens provide to students include:
- Improved classroom behavior
- Valuable life skills such as higher-level conflict resolution, problem solving and thinking and
- Increased self-esteem (http://bit.ly/1k5exc3).
- School gardens are reportedly helping combat childhood obesity (http://bit.ly/1joJcks).
- School garden programs have a positive effect not only on students, but also on school staff, families and communities (http://bit.ly/1hEA1uo).
Michigan 4-H and the Michigan 4-H Children's Garden are eager to
embrace this innovative trend, and to
work with county Extension staff, schools and partners to
:
- Share the research behind this growing movement
- Inform others about tried and true best practices, and
- Introduce exciting new programs.
Join us at Kettunen Center from March 11 to 12
, 2016 for a special,
fun-filled, information-packed
training for Extension staff, teachers and volunteers
that features the
Learn Grow Eat & Go
curriculum to use in schools, afterschool programs, 4-H and partner programs.

MACOMB COUNTY PARTICIPATION NEEDED:
Help MSU Extension Sharpen Its Focus!
Michigan State University
Extension has long been a source of information and education for Michigan residents. To help define the needs and priorities of those residents, MSU
Extension professionals throughout the state are asking Michigan citizens to help them determine where they should place their future emphasis through a short online survey.
Michigan 4-H parents, alums and volunteers (anyone over the age of 18) are encouraged to
take the survey. Although not collected in the survey, input from youth will be solicited through a series of face-to-face meetings.
Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration
We are pleased to announce the creation of the first Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration. Next November, the nation will elect the 45th President of the United States. Where will you be in January 2017 for the presidential inauguration?
Citizenship Washington Focus has a rich history of teaching high school age 4-H'ers citizenship and leadership in our nation's capital. For more than 50 years, thousands of students have experienced the life-changing power of 4-H CWF. This has happened with the support of our nation's land-grant universities and Cooperative Extension System, 4-H professionals, parents, volunteers and our federal partners at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the United States Department of Agriculture.
New in 2017 - we are excited to extend the program to the Executive Branch of the federal government and let students ages 14-19 experience Inauguration Day in Washington, D.C. Citizenship Washington Focus: Presidential Inauguration will take place on January 17-21, 2017. Delegations will experience Inauguration Day, a behind the scenes look at the nation's capital, educational programs and experience their own Inauguration Ball.
Registration closes on June 30, 2016. Space is limited so get your delegation registered today. For further information please visit www.4HCWF.org.
