New Universe of Learning: The Emergence of Networked Institutions

"It is only a matter of time before networked solutions become mainstream activities in higher education," according to Peter Smith, professor of innovative practices at the University of Maryland University College. Earlier in his career, Smith was founding president of the Community College of Vermont and California State University, Monterey Bay, as well Vermont education commissioner, lieutenant governor and U.S congressman. Now he is something of a higher ed disruptor, having recently finished a stint leading the Open College at Kaplan University, which he also founded. As Smith writes now in NEJHE: "The accelerating emergence of non-accredited third-party providers as viable players in the postsecondary space is the single most compelling development in the past 24 months. It turns the heretofore unassailable primacy of the campus and the resources housed on the campus on its head by demonstrating and legitimizing that purposeful and qualitative learning can indeed happen elsewhere, including on the web and in the cloud."
Teachers are looking for innovative ways to teach the "big ideas" emerging in the curricula, especially in STEAM fields (science technology, engineering, arts and math). As a result, learning environments that support digital learning and educational technology on various platforms and devices are taking on ever-increasing importance in today's schools. Ted Prawat, director of the Educational Design Center at Thomas College, explains how a blurring of the boundaries between learners of content, and teachers of content will help pave the way for tomorrow's "idea economy.
