Club Enrollment Update

For this program year, the enrollment deadline for returning members has been extended to six weeks after the launch of 4-H Online. While the county's deadline to enroll/reenroll has been extended, clubs may have their own enrollment deadlines due to the nature of their projects.

Macomb County MSU Extension will be distributing club enrollment packets with all necessary materials except 4-H Online enrollment instructions. The forms 4-H Online entries will replace are the member and volunteer enrollment forms. Youth Code of Conduct/Media-Medical, Michigan 4-H Shooting Sports Parental Permission, and Volunteer Authorization forms are still required. Members registering online within six weeks of 4-H Online going live will not be penalized for registering after the traditional Macomb County enrollment deadline. Club leaders are asked to include a club roster. Participation fee payments should be sent to Macomb County MSU Extension, Attn: 4-H, 21885 Dunham Road, Suite 12, Clinton Township, MI 48036. Make checks payable to MSU.

More information about 4-H Online will be available soon. What we know you can expect is that:

1) Families will be entering their own data online.

2) Payment options will include cash or check and possibly credit card.

3) A temporary enrollment form has been developed for groups that want/need them now, however, those who use it will be required to reenter their information later using 4-H Online.

Macomb County MSU Extension will continue to update families with information as it becomes available.

Happy Thanksgiving from the 4-H Staff

The 4-H staff is thankful for the families that make our programs innovative, beneficial and fun, and now seems like the perfect opportunity to let you know it. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us to all of you!

Thanksgiving Facts:

  • 46 million turkeys are eaten each Thanksgiving.
  • 88% of Americans surveyed by the National Turkey Federation eat turkey on Thanksgiving.
  • The average weight of a turkey purchased at Thanksgiving is 15 pounds.
  • Turkey breeding has caused turkey breasts to grow so large that the turkeys fall over.
  • The five most popular ways to serve leftover turkey are in a sandwich, stew, chili or soup, casseroles and as a burger.

Breslin4HDay_0118144-H Day at the Breslin With the Lady Spartans

Join other 4-H youth, 4-H volunteers, 4-H families, and MSU Extension staff members and their families on Sunday, January 18, 2015, at the tenth annual MSU Extension 4-H Youth Development celebration at the Spartan women's basketball game. This year, the Lady Spartans will host the Iowa Hawkeyes. As usual, the game will be held at the Breslin Student Events Center on MSU's campus. Gate D will open for 4-H and MSU Extension guests at 12:30 pm, while the game begins at 2 pm.

This year's theme for the 4-H Day at the Breslin With the Lady Spartans is "Join the Club!"

Tickets are free to 4-H youth and their families, 4-H volunteers, and MSU Extension staff and their families. Contact your county 4-H office to obtain your free tickets. Just let your 4-H leader or your county Extension office know you (and how many of your family members) want to attend.

Other extras at the game include:

- Joining fellow 4-H'ers in saying the 4-H pledge.

- Exploring the wide range of 4-H programming with games and activities on the concourse. These activities range from educational displays about science and robotics to a full-size, spin-the-wheel game about the life skills youth learn in 4-H.

- Getting your picture taken with Sparty.

Transportation may be coordinated through your county Extension office. Contact them for details. Parking is free for school buses; all other buses are $20, while the cost for cars is $5. Be sure to show your MSU Extension and 4-H pride by wearing your green and white 4-H or MSU Extension apparel.

At last year's 4-H Day at the Breslin, 4-H and Extension fans helped swell the crowd to more than 6,400. This proved to be one of the Lady Spartan's largest crowds of the season. One 4-H volunteer, whose club members eagerly anticipate this event, says, "This is a terrific, low-cost opportunity for my 4-H club to bond, while seeing a highly ranked team play in a first-class setting."

Gail Hebert, who helps coordinate 4-H Day at the Breslin, says the event ". . . is a great way to celebrate 4-H and offer fans an inside look at all the wonderful things it stands for. Watching a nationally recognized sports team is icing on the cake."

For more information or to request tickets, contact Dequindre Bell, 4-H Program Coordinator, at belldequ@anr.msu.edu or call 586-469-5979.

2015 Michigan Envirothon: Inspiring Environmental Stewardship in Michigan's Youth

Michigan Envirothon (ME) has been inspiring and training the next generation of Michigan's natural resource leaders since 1994.  ME is an exciting and challenging way to provide natural resource and environmental science education to high school students throughout the state of Michigan.  The ME program focuses on using the outdoors as a classroom, utilizing diverse "eco-stations" as competition testing sites, and interaction and training with professionals in the field.  In addition to gaining valuable knowledge, teams also complete a Community Outreach Project as part of the competition; identifying and addressing a natural resource issue in their community through hands-on problem solving and community education.

Form a team: Michigan Envirothon teams may be comprised of up to eight students (five team members and three alternate members). Please note for state competition only five team members may compete.  Teams may be formed by school districts, home school groups, career centers, Girl/Boy Scout groups, FFA, 4-H, church groups and/or environmental clubs.  Team advisors are not required to have any special training; they just need to be an adult interested in working with the students and helping them prepare for competition.  Assistance is often available through the local Conservation District (see www.macd.org for a directory) and other groups.

More Event Details:

The state is divided into six regions for the purposes of testing and training and six regional competitions will be held in March. These competitions function as both a training and review day as well as a qualifier for the state competition. Training sessions will be facilitated by local resource professionals and held outside, (weather permitting) with hands-on activities over lecture style presentations when possible.

The top 24 regional competitors from around the state will advance to battle it out May 6 - 8, 2015 at Fort Custer in Augusta, Michigan for the chance to represent Michigan in the North American Envirothon at Missouri State University in Springfield on July 27-August 2, 2015. Teams are required to participate in their assigned regional competition, unless otherwise approved prior to the event. Regional Competitions may be combined if the number of registered teams from a region does not meet minimum requirements.

For additional program details check out the Envirothon Manual, and Webpage.  Register online. For more information, contact Angie Sandusky at 517-324-5274, 517-930-7449, or
