Armada Fair: Sunday Judging Reminders
Sunday judging at the Armada Fair is this Sunday, August 16, 2015, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This time is for everyone including Cloverbuds and Teen Clerks. Have your
Danish judging sheets filled out and your project tags properly attached to your project(s). Remember, only children are allowed under the tent for judging. Parents must stay outside at all times. The forecast is calling for a high of 89 degrees on Sunday, so bring water to drink while you wait.
Armada Fair Parking
Main Street in Armada is under construction. Avoid construction by using the back entrance off of Armada Center Road.
Don't Forget to Volunteer During the Fair!
The 2015 Armada Fair is right around the corner! The fair provides our 4-H members the opportunity to showcase and exhibit their 4-H projects. But, your help is needed in order to provide these opportunities to our 4-H youth. Volunteer help is needed for cleaning, set up, assistance at youth livestock and dog shows, check out, and tear down. We realize that fair week is a busy time for our 4-H families, but please review the schedule and make time in which you and your family can help. Remember 4-H'ers - while you are showing your animal or sitting with the judge to have your project judged, others are volunteering their time to make that event run smoothly! Return the favor and help when you can.
Please contact the superintendents regarding the specifics for each show or to sign up to volunteer. Superintendents need committed volunteers to make each show a success! Contact information for superintendents can be found in the Armada Fair Book.
The Armada Agricultural Society recognizes the 4-H community for their hard work during the fair with a donation. This donation helps provide scholarships, programs, and services to the 4-H community each year. Thank you in advance for volunteering at the Armada Fair!

Youth Livestock Auction Participants Asked to Bring Snacks and Water
The Armada Fair Youth Livestock Sale Committee is asking every family that participates in the auction sale to bring one case of water and one box of snacks for our buyers. Snacks need to be prepackaged in single serving size. Suggested snacks include cookies, crackers, candy, and chips. Please drop off your donations at the Sale Committee Office in Barn #15 on Friday morning of the auction (August 21, 2015).
4-H Youth Council Coffee Cart and Photo Booth
While at the Armada Fair, be sure to stop by the
Macomb County 4-H Youth Council Coffee Cart and Photo Booth. The booth will be outside the 4-H Exhibit Barn in the little red barn and will be open every day, August 17-23, 2015, from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Keurig coffee and hot chocolate, danishes, muffins and fruit will be available.
Commemorate your time at the 2015 Armada Fair with a photo from the 4-H Youth Council Photo Booth! For $5, the photo will be printed and placed in an Armada Fair frame while you wait.
Your 4-H Coffee Cart and Photo Booth purchases will benefit the Macomb County 4-H Endowment Fund that will support Macomb County 4-H programming for years to come.
Calling All 4-H Clubs! Volunteer at Fair, Earn Cash for your Club
Attention All 4-H Clubs in Macomb County:
The Armada Fair is next week! Although this is a busy time, we would like to encourage all registered county clubs, those showing and not showing at the fair, to volunteer to work our exhibit barn as well as our fundraiser during the week of August 17th to the 23rd to help raise money for the Council to give back to you-our clubs.
This year, along with walking around the exhibit barn, clubs that sign up for shifts will be in charge of selling coffee, danishes, and working the photo booth beneath the awning outside the barn during the period they signed up for. Clubs that sign up to work the barn and photo booth/concession stand will receive 25 percent of the total profit made during their shift(s). The remaining 75 percent will be added to the county's endowment fund that is designated to fund Macomb 4-H clubs' endeavors for many years to come.
Training on how to work the photo booth/concession station is required. If you were unable to attend the mandatory training at the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council meeting on July 9th, please contact [email protected]. Thank you for all participating and helping raise money for us to support and fund the clubs of Macomb County!

Superintendent's Message for Rabbit Leaders and Exhibitors
Rabbit Barn Duty
Leaders need to sign up for two time slots for Rabbit Barn Duty. I have the chart available and you can contact me to check open slots.
The slots each day are:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and 4 p.m.-10 p.m.
Thursday and Saturday 4 p.m.-10 p.m.
Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
There will be a posted list of barn duties and emergency contacts, so everyone knows what to do while they are on duty. Of course the main responsibilities are to keep the rabbits safe, the barn clean, and promote your project area. I will also distribute this list as soon as it is finalized.

Poultry Shows and Events Cancelled Due to Avian Influenza
On June 1, 2015, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD)
issued a statement cancelling all poultry shows and exhibitions held in Michigan as a precaution
against the spread of avian influenza. This decision affects all 4-H poultry shows at county and
regional fairs, as well as other local 4-H events, until further notice. Co-mingling animals from
various flocks and facilities at these types of events provides an opportunity for diseases to
spread quickly.
MDARD's decision was a precautionary measure made in the interest of animal and public
health, as well to protect Michigan's poultry population. However, on June 8, 2015, the
Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced the first cases of highly pathogenic avian
influenza (HPAI) H5N2 had been confirmed in the state. The disease was found in free-ranging
Canada
geese in Macomb County.
Though the disease is currently only in wild bird populations, no avian species will be allowed to
be displayed as part of any 4-H project, whether at a show, a club or group meeting, a petting
zoo, or at any other event or venue. The affected birds include but are not limited to those that
are part of Michigan 4-H's poultry (such as chickens, pheasants, turkeys, quail, water fowl,
guinea fowl and pea fowl) and exotic bird projects (such as emus and ostriches). As an extra
precautionary measure, MSU Extension will also not allow the display of any live birds that are
part of the 4-H small animals program known as Pocket Pets, including canaries, parrots,
parakeets and macaws. This is for the health and safety of all birds in the state.
Avian Flu: What it Means for Fair's Youth Exhibitors
MSU Extension staff, poultry superintendent Lori Clough, and members of the Armada Fair Board understand that the cancellation of 4-H poultry shows is disappointing to the many 4-H youth and volunteers who have invested their time and talents into poultry projects. While unfortunate, the decision is in the best interest of the state's poultry farmers, backyard hobbyists and 4-H families who participate in the poultry project. Please use this real-life opportunity as a teaching moment for our youth.
We still want to provide opportunities for 4-H'ers with poultry-related projects to showcase their work and to offer them valuable learning experiences in the project area. We are strongly encouraging all poultry project youth to compete in poultry showmanship, poultry club displays, egg production and to enter a poultry poster in the "Vet Science" category as an alternative to the meat or breed project.
Report Possible Cases of Avian Influenza
For Michigan residents that are concerned about avian influenza in wild birds, if they notice a death loss of three or more free-ranging wild birds, primarily ducks, geese, swans, and/or shore birds, they should report it to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources at 517-336-5030. Volunteers Needed at the Michigan State Fair

4-H has a booth at the 2015 Fifth Third Bank Michigan State Fair and needs your help to promote 4-H to fairgoers! The Michigan State Fair is Friday, September 4th through Monday, September 7th at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. The 4-H area will include a booth with tables for promotional items, crafts and hands-on activities, and educational demonstrations. This is a great opportunity for 4-H'ers to promote our program, talk about 4-H projects, and recruit volunteers and members. Fair admission will be provided to all who staff the booth! This includes 4-H'ers, parents, and volunteers who help in the booth. Work a shift or two and then enjoy the rest of the day at the fair! Register Now for the National 4-H Dairy Conference
The 2015 National 4-H Dairy Conference is September 27 - October 1 in Madison, WI. For youth to attend the conference, they must meet the following criteria, as established by the Conference organizers:
1. Participated at least three years in the 4-H dairy program, including the current year
2. Are in 10th - 12th grade and no older than 18 years as of January 1, 2015
3. Have not attended the national dairy conference before
4. Are not exhibiting animals at the World Dairy Expo
5. Are not competing in this year's National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest
$400 per participant covers registration fees, travel, and housing and meals at the event. Please contact Marinda at [email protected] for the registration forms. Become a 4-H Outdoor Adventure Challenge Leader
The 4-H Outdoor Adventure Challenge (OAC) program uses the outdoors to help young people develop life skills. A multi-session training program is designed to develop the skills of adults interested in becoming OAC leaders. The training program includes an introduction to the 4-H OAC program and training in the technical skills needed for backpacking, caving, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering, winter camping, and outdoor survival. Applications are now being accepted for 4-H OAC upcoming workshops.

Promotional materials for 4-H events such as livestock clinics, fundraisers, etc., must include the 4-H, MSU Extension, Macomb County, and Make Macomb Your Home logos and the MSU Extension disclaimer.
Flyers without these elements will not be approved and cannot be distributed. Contact Macomb County MSU Extension 4-H if you need copies of the logos.

Michigan 4-H Animal Science Sportsperson of the Year Award
Hey, 4-H volunteers & members! Fall is recruitment time, full of opportunities to build membership. Extension staff wanted to pass along some ideas and resources for successful recruiting. Planning recruitment events as a club is a fun team building activity with many life skill building qualities. It provides youth the opportunity to improve their public speaking, marketing, and strategic planning. School open houses are excellent events to piggy-back and many will let you set up a booth and give you some time to speak to the group. No one speaks about 4-H better then the members themselves! Setting up a demonstration or providing a make-and-take craft project with youth while other members of the team speak with parents works very well. Another thing to keep in mind while planning your club year are public community events such as People, Pets, & Vets. Your Extension office has recruitment materials available for members, such as Macomb County 4-H Program Directories, Welcome to 4-H flyers, banners, and posters in various sizes. Club leaders were each given a flash drive with recruitment materials on them so that your materials can be customized. Please share your success stories on the Macomb County 4-H Facebook page or submit contributions to [email protected] for the email blast!
Seed Saving Class Offered
Seed Saving will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on August 17th at Macomb County MSU Extension, 21885 Dunham Road, Clinton Township. Use Entrance E. Master Gardener Karen Burke will provide information on the ins and outs of saving seeds, including drying, storing and other tips. She will also discuss creating a seed library. Class is free, but please register in advance by calling 586-469-6440.
Junior Leadership Macomb is still accepting applications
Junior Leadership Macomb is an eight day leadership experience for high school juniors. Participating students will gain new information on the assets/issues of Macomb County through engaging activities, field trips and group discussions. They will also learn about their own leadership style.
Students entering their junior year in high school in the Fall of 2015 are eligible to apply.
The Junior Leadership Macomb Program is designed to:
- Create opportunities for students to realize their leadership potential
- Expose students to the systems that make up a County (Health Care, Environment, Arts, etc.)
- Provide access to a network of professionals
- Foster a commitment to community involvement

Learn about Animals and Veterinary Medicine at People, Pets & Vets
Learn about different animals and talk to veterinarians and other animal care providers at People, Pets and Vets at Macomb Community College from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in Clinton Township on November 7, 2015. The event is free.
There will be exhibits for dentistry, leader dogs, microchipping, anatomy, surgery, radiology, parasitology, and emergency care and more. Experience unusual pets and even take your "wounded" stuffed animals to the Teddy Bear Clinic for surgery.
People, Pets and Vets is an excellent way to create an awareness of the veterinary profession.
