State 4-H participation fees must be received at the county Extension office for enrollments to be considered complete. Please do not pay in more than one club and/or county. Members should only pay the $10 per youth State 4-H participation fee once each year, in the county where their primary club is located. Cash or check payments should be given to your club leader or to the county MSU Extension office.

New Macomb County resource center in Warren to house MSU Extension

Macomb County opened a new resource center last week which will house programs that will be of benefit to local families. The family resource center will offer valuable programs for the Macomb County Health Department, Macomb County Community Services Agency and Macomb County MSU Extension. It will be located at the Max Thompson Community Center at 11370 Hupp, at the corner of Hupp and Marmon in Warren. The Max Thompson Community Center, originally Max Thompson Elementary School, has been vacant for several years. In 2014, Van Dyke Public Schools agreed to lease 9,400 square feet of the facility to Macomb County Health & Community Services to house its programs.

"This co-location of services created a family resource center that allows one-stop shopping for a broad array of social support services, health services and educational programs and services," said Macomb County Health & Services Director Steve Gold. The Health & Community Services agencies have additional locations to serve residents in other parts of Macomb County:

Health Department:

Southeast Health Center, 25401 Harper Avenue, St. Clair Shores, (586) 466-6800

Southwest Health Center, 27690 Van Dyke Avenue, Warren, (586) 465-8090

Community Services Agency:

North Action Center, 30375 Clark Street, New Haven, (586) 749-5146

Central Action Center, 16 Market Street, Mount Clemens, (586) 469-6964

MSU Extension

VerKuilen Building, 21885 Dunham Road, Suite 12, Clinton Township, (586) 469-5180

Macomb County 4-H staff members relocated to the Thompson Center location are Kea Norrell-Aitch, 4-H Educator, and Elizabeth Duran, 4-H Program Coordinator. The two will also maintain office hours at the Clinton Township office. Their contact information will remain the same.

Volunteer at Tomlinson Arboretum in Clinton Township

The Friends of Tomlinson Arboretum welcomes volunteers who are willing to continue to create and develop the Tomlinson Arboretum in Clinton Township, an arboretum emphasizing native Michigan trees, shrubs, and wildflowers as a place to enjoy, learn, and grow. Long-term initiatives include the construction of a gazebo and observation decks. Short-term objectives include planting and caring for the trees, bushes, and flowers in the East and West Arboretum, as well as systematically removing invasive species that threaten the long-term viability of its native species.

The Arboretum's annual Spring Spruce-Up will be held on Saturday, May 2 beginning at 10 a.m. at the 18 Mile Road dead-end cul-de-sac West Entrance just east of Garfield Road. 4-H members and volunteers are invited to join with others to help clean up the Arboretum (raking out the mulch around each planting, and adding new mulch as needed) and spreading mulch out in several new gardens surrounding our recently planted hemlocks, cedars, aspens, and river birches.

Members are also invited to attend the Tomlinson Arboretum's first public educational seminar on Saturday, April 18 from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Clinton Township Civic Center board room. Martha Holzheuer, Landscape Ecologist from Environmental Consulting Technologies, will be the guest speaker. Her subject will be Partnerships & Prairies: Caring for the Wildflowers and Wildlife at the Tomlinson Arboretum. Following the presentation, a guided tour of the 24 acre Tomlinson Arboretum site will be conducted for all interested attendees. For more information, call 586-723-8092.

Informational Session on Proposal 1 to be Held in Macomb County March 23rd

The May 5 ballot proposal may only be asking if the state constitution should be amended, but it is raising plenty of questions for citizens. Michigan State University Extension (MSUE), in partnership with the Macomb County Board of Commissioners, the MSUE Leadership Council and Macomb Area Communities for Regional Opportunities (MACRO) have organized two informational sessions to provide an unbiased overview of the ballot proposal and answer the many questions citizens have about it. The presentation will be held on Monday, March 23 from 1-3:15 p.m. at the Shelby Township Board Room,

51670 Van Dyke Ave., Shelby Township; and from 6-8:15 p.m. at the Clinton-Macomb Library, 40900 Romeo Plank, Clinton Township.

The program will include an overview of the proposal, in-depth discussion by representatives from the Citizens Research Council and SEMCOG. A facilitated question and answer session will follow. To pre-register or for more information about these programs, please call MSU Extension at 586-469-6440.
