DAAD Alumna receives Nobel Prize in Literature

This year’s Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to the Belarussian author, Svetlana Alexievich, who lived in Berlin through DAAD’s Artist-in-Residence program (BKP). She is the fourth BKP alumna to receive this honor, following Mario Vargas Llosa (2009), Imre Kertész (2002) and Gao Xingjian (2000). In 2013, Alexievich was also awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.

Alexievich’s time in Berlin saw the completion of her most recent book, “Second-Hand-Zeit: Leben auf den Trümmern des Sozialismus." The Swedish Academy characterizes her body of work as a “collage of human voices” resulting from countless interviews she conducted with people in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.

In May, Alexievich returned to Berlin upon the invitation of BKP to participate in a podium discussion, where she said, “Berlin is a city that lived through the tragedies of the 20th century and is strongly shaped by them. I would classify Berlin as the capital of a spirit that is open to all people. Thanks to DAAD’s BKP, the artists I encountered from around the world opened both my mind and my heart. This helped me work on the novel that I finished in Berlin.”
