“Enjoying the experiences of an uncommon life” in the Wake of Hurricane Katrina

This past summer marked the ten-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina—a disaster that left not only massive destruction in its wake, but also deep scars that persist in our collective memory to this day. Nonetheless, the resilience of New Orleans residents exemplifies what humans can achieve with a little optimism and the desire to succeed. Scott Alexander's story is an uplifting example of this.

When Katrina hit, Scott Alexander was a student at LSU. He participated in a special grant program that DAAD organized for students affected by the catastrophe. He recently reached out to DAAD to describe the impact that his exchange semester at Philipps-Universität in Marburg had on him:

“That one semester for me was transformative. I came back to LSU for one last semester to graduate, and after a summer of training with the military, I returned to Germany for graduate school to get my masters in International Development. Currently, I work for a government contractor for the United States Agency for International Development. I have visited 30 countries and counting. Without this opportunity that came along during the chaos and uncertainty in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I wouldn’t have traveled, enjoyed the experiences of an uncommon life, been blessed with unique friendships, or be on my current path of working in the field of International Development.”

We at DAAD are encouraged that Scott Alexander’s stay in Germany motivated him to pursue a career which takes him all over the world.
