DAAD Faculty Summer Seminar in German Studies 2016

Germans, Jews, and the Collapse of the Secular Future
Cornell University
June 19-July 29, 2016

This year's faculty summer seminar in German Studies will be led by Jonathan Boyarin, the Diann G. and Thomas A. Mann Professor of Modern Jewish Studies at Cornell University. The seminar is open to scholars with a broad range of competences and research foci – especially historians, anthropologists, literary scholars, those in Jewish studies and German studies, as well as those working in postcolonial and interdisciplinary cultural studies more generally. Readings will vary in genre, but will surely include the work of Benjamin and Scholem, as well as foundational studies in the rhetoric of temporality and progress by scholars such as Blumenberg, Koselleck, Habermas, and Löwith—taken both as sources of insight and as data for a lingering nostalgia for the lost secular future.

The seminar will engage participants’ own ongoing research in the seminar, with an eye toward advancing individual projects while working toward a new articulation of this situation that defines our common present. Applications for the seminar will be accepted until March 1, 2016. For more details on the seminar and application instructions, please visit https://www.daad.org/summerseminar2

P.R.I.M.E.: Postdoctoral Researchers International Mobility Experience

Attract, train, and retain – under this motto, DAAD launches the third round of its P.R.I.M.E. initiative, which addresses postdocs of all nationalities, who see their future career in Germany, but who first wish to spend some time researching abroad. This program funds a one year research stay abroad followed by a six month integration period at a German university of the fellows’ choice. During the stay abroad, grantees optimally prepare for the move to Germany by contacting the prospective host institution. In accordance with the “European Charter for Researchers”, the DAAD offers funding to German institutions of higher education for the employment of the fellowship holders, thus ensuring that they receive adequate social security coverage throughout the whole funding period.

The P.R.I.M.E. website contains contacts at German universities who provide support to postdocs in the identification of suitable research groups and the application process. German institutions of higher education interested in nominating a contact person for P.R.I.M.E. are requested to write to prime@daad.de. Application Deadline: 1 February 2016
Earliest Fellowship start date: 1 September 2016
