Call for Applications: DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies

This year, the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) will award the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in recognition of exceptional work in Politics and International Relations. We stongly encourage applications from American scholars who have made innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies.

A jury composed of several highly respected scholars in the field is charged with selecting the winner. This year’s prize carries a stipend of $5,000 and will be awarded at the Institute’s Global Leadership Award Dinner on November 5, 2015, in New York City.

As a rule, awardees must be members of a university faculty or research institute staff in the United States at the mid or senior level and have actively contributed to the discourse on Germany in the academic and public spheres. They must also be American citizens or residents. The chief selection criterion is an outstanding publication record in the field of German politics and/or international relations in the post-World War II period. In addition to the German Studies field, applicants are also welcome from the areas of Comparative European Politics and the European Union, provided that Germany is the primary focus.

Applications must include: 1) A cover letter of no more than three pages; 2) A current C.V. of the applicant with a publication list; and 3) The names of three other leading scholars familiar with the applicant’s work. Applications must be received no later than August 15, 2015 and should be sent, preferably by e-mail, to Jessica Riester Hart at [email protected] or to: DAAD Prize Selection Committee, American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, 1755 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Suite 700 Washington, DC 20036

Press Conference to mark DAAD's 90th anniversary in Berlin on June 17th

In 1922, Heidelberg student Carl Joachim Friedrich and the Institute of International Education in New York organized scholarships for 13 German students of Social and Political Studies. Shortly thereafter, an exchange program began at Heidelberg University, which was officially established as “Akademischer Austauschdienst e.V.” in 1925. In October of that year, the new organization transferred its operations to Berlin, changed its charter and declared its mission to organize student and academic exchange in all disciplines. As a result of this initiative, the DAAD came into being.

Since DAAD’s founding in 1925, it has supported more than 1.9 million scholars in Germany and around the world. It has developed from a pure scholarship organization into an internationalization agency for German universities and a think tank for scientific collaboration. DAAD now operates a worldwide network of more than 70 branch offices and information centers.

To mark DAAD’s 90th anniversary this year, President Prof. Dr. Margret Wintermantel and General Secretary Dr. Dorothea Rüland will host a press conference to discuss DAAD’s past and present contributions to development and internationalization, as well as current challenges.

If you will be in Berlin on Wednesday, June 17th and wish to attend this event, please register by sending an email to [email protected] by June 15th. The press conference is followed by a celebration at the Academy of Arts on Pariser Platz at 6 o’clock, where Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier will speak.

"Research in Germany" at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society

“Research in Germany”, which includes DAAD, will once again be participating in the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), one of the largest meetings worldwide in the field of chemistry. This is one of several scientific conferences that "Research in Germany" will attend this year.

This year’s meeting is taking place in Boston, MA, August 16-20. Internationally renowned scientists such as Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Freund and Prof. Dr. Peter Strasser from the Excellence Cluster „Unifying Concepts in Catalysis (UniCat)“ will be joining representatives of the American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, DAAD, the DFG and the German Chemical Society (GDCh) this year with joint activities. Discipline-specific print material will also be distributed.

The following activities are planned:
- August 16-18, 2015 – „Research in Germany“ information booth (#1309 in the exhibit hall): Representatives of scientific organizations will individually inform visitors of opportunities in Germany for funding, research and collaboration.

- August 18, 2015, 12 - 2 p.m. (room tbd) – „Research in Germany Science Lunch“: Renowned scientists will give presentations on chemical research in Germany and will address individual questions over a lunch. Opening remarks by the GDCh and ACS International Center. Seating is limited.
