DAAD Webinar Series: Study Abroad Opportunities at Jacobs University Bremen

In this webinar, DAAD representative Hanni Geist from the Information Center San Francisco will first talk about funding opportunities to study either one or two semester as an undergraduate or to pursue a graduate degree in Germany. In the second part, Yuliya Salauyova, coordinator of the International Office at Jacobs University Bremen, will introduce the university, its study abroad programs and related services, as well as partnership opportunities.

Jacobs University, based in Bremen, is a research-oriented, state-accredited campus university with a broad portfolio or pre-degree, undergraduate and graduate study programs from natural and social sciences, engineering and economics.

The Hessen International Summer University (ISU) at the Philipps-Universität Marburg is a four-week summer study program, open to all candidates looking to combine their academic studies with an exciting intercultural experience. The program offers an intensive German course (also for beginners), specialized seminars in English, credits (up to 9 ECTS), weekend field trips to various destinations in Germany and France and more! The ISU will take place from July, 18th, 2015 – August, 15th, 2015 and will be dedicated to the following topic: “Europe and the Middle East in Transition”.

Advertisement: Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS)

FUBiS is an intensive academic program through which students can earn credits that may be counted toward their degrees at their home institutions. FUBiS sessions run for 3 to 6 weeks and take place both in summer and winter.
The FUBiS summer program 2015 takes place in two terms:
• FUBiS term II: May 30 - July 11, 2015 (6 weeks)
• FUBiS term III: July 18 - August 15, 2015 (4 weeks)
Each term may be taken separately. Students can choose between subject courses (mostly taught in English) and German language courses.
The subject courses are offered within the fields of Architecture, Art history, Politics, Humanities, Social Sciences, Cultural Studies, History, and Music. The subject courses may be combined with a semi-intensive German language course.
The German language courses are offered on up to five different levels of proficiency and take place as semi-intensive (3 days per week) or intensive (5 days per week) classes. The semi-intensive courses may be combined with a subject course.
Study visits within Berlin are an integral part of all our courses. In addition, FUBiS offers field trips to the Berlin Reichstag and a River Boat Tour through Downtown Berlin as well as day and weekend trips to Weimar, Dresden, and Hamburg.

Upcoming Deadline: Annual DAAD North America Contest - Reunification in 250 Words or Less!



2015 marks the 25th Year Anniversary of the German Reunification. Political leaders, poets, scholars and eyewitnesses, just to name a few have eloquently, poignantly and incisively captured and paid homage to the significance of this momentuous event that has changed the course of history and transformed the lives of many. However these testimonies and tributes do not exhaust the ways of commemorating this event which Chancellor Merkel described as, "a dream come true." It is in this spirit that we invite you to write a 250 word (or less) essay, poem or short story that is inspired by the event the German reunification.

All contestants must be currently enrolled in a North American institution of higher education.

The deadline for submissions is April 21, 2015.

DAAD contest rules apply.

Grand Prize: a round-trip flight to Germany.
Second Prize: iPad mini

Call for Nominees: Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize

Since 1997 the Friends of the German Historical Institute award the Fritz Stern Dissertation Prize for the best doctoral dissertation on German history written at North American universities. Dissertations on all periods of German history, on German-American relations, and on the history of Germans in North America are eligible. The winner is invited to the GHI to present her/his research at the annual symposium of the Friends in November. The prizewinner will receive an award of $2,000 and reimbursement for travel to Washington D.C.

Candidates are nominated by their dissertation advisers. Their dissertations must have been completed, defended, and authenticated between January 1 and December 31, 2014. The prize committee will accept nominations through May 31, 2015, and will announce the prize winners at the end of the summer.
