Ensuring that integration succeeds: DAAD’s measures for refugees

In view of the growing number of refugees entering Germany, DAAD organized a conference with university representatives in Berlin at the end of September to determine current needs and necessary measures. DAAD has already implemented several measures which support refugees, for example last year’s “Leadership for Syria” scholarship program. They, along with the universities, receive ongoing support and consultation from the DAAD.

The latest set of measures for refugees builds on feedback from DAAD and complements its funding instruments. For instance, the DAAD Info Centre in Bonn, which fields questions and offers advice to interested parties, will be entrusted with further responsibilities. “I’m pleased that the DAAD is regarded as an expert organization,” said DAAD President Professor Margret Wintermantel at the press conference, declaring that “if any organization has experience with integrating foreign students, then it’s the DAAD.”

Federal Minister of Education Professor Johanna Wanka underscored the value of the work of the DAAD. “If integration is to truly succeed, then it shall happen largely through education,” said Wanka and emphasized that the “best possibility to implement the measures is to rely on the longstanding cooperation with the DAAD.” This is evident in the three-part approach of the new set of measures which calls for recognizing the refugees’ skills and qualifications, ensuring that refugees possess the necessary academic qualifications, and supporting their long-term integration at the universities. Advertisement: Boost your international career in Germany with the Esslingen MBA

Alumna Dr. Grace Ng-Krülle, MBA 1999, now a Research Fellow at Solution Forest in Australia wrote: "The Esslingen MBA is a melting pot of culture, a platform for brainstorming ideas and for building relationships that cut across conventional borders."

Esslingen: one of the first MBA programs in Germany providing top-notch business education.

The Esslingen MBA allows students to study in one of the most industrial regions in Europe. All master's classes are taught in English by highly qualified professors or professionally qualified instructors with rich business experience. Our MBA is well connected to, and well supported by, corporations such as Bosch, Daimler and Festo. Small class sizes of 25 provide students with an optimal learning environment. An internationally diverse MBA class is one of our strongest assets.

It is also one of our greatest teaching tools that we integrate the varied individual perspectives of participants, the educational approach and curriculum. A close relationship to the industry enables students to learn theory and gain state-of-the-art knowledge, both inside and out of the classroom.

Hands-on learning activities, such as company visits and real examples are carried out under close guidance; students have the opportunity to study German and to explore the German mentality and culture by participating in excursions, cultural lectures and social events. Our programs are strongly sponsored by the German government.

Students receive an MBA valued at over 30,000 for less than 5,000!

New DAAD Campaign to further increase mobility of German students

The German federal and state governments, together with DAAD, have set a goal that by 2020 half of all German university graduates will have studied abroad. To help reach this goal, DAAD has already initiated a campaign funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research to promote study abroad among pupils and students. It launched in late November under the name “studieren weltweit – ERLEBE ES!“.

The social media-based campaign targets 17- to 27-year-olds and strongly encourages user participation. Young students from Germany who are going to study abroad are invited to be correspondents and report from their host countries about student life outside of Germany.

“Studieren weltweit – ERLEBE ES!“ was presented during a conference on academic mobility through the Bologna Process just days ago in Berlin. More than 350 participants from the academic world were in attendance, including many representatives from international study programs supported by DAAD. Partnership between DAAD and Mitacs to strengthen German-Canadian research networks

DAAD and Mitacs are pleased to announce a bilateral agreement to foster student mobility between Canada and Germany, with each country hosting up to 60 top-ranked undergraduates each year, starting in the summer of 2017. Valued at CAD $5.4 million, the agreement represents a significant shared investment in research initiatives of mutual interest and benefit to the two countries and their young researchers.

Through DAAD's RISE program and Mitacs' Globalink program, undergraduate students conduct research internships at universities and institutes in their respective host country. They are matched with expert mentors, receive professional development training, and benefit from the excellent educational, social, and recreational opportunities afforded in Canada and Germany.

A survey released earlier this week indicates the Mitacs Globalink program helps attract the world's top students to Canada and creates future collaborations for them with their host professors or other researchers. DAAD Secretary General Dorothea Rüland said of this new agreement: "With Mitacs, we believe we have found an excellent partner. Our two organizations share many important values, in particular commitments to academic excellence, and the importance of international academic exchange."

New RISE Website Launches, Databases for RISE Germany and RISE Professional Now Open

DAAD is pleased to announce that it will offer its internship programs again in summer 2016: RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) Germany, and RISE professional. RISE has established itself as an outstanding opportunity to combine serious research with a rewarding study-abroad experience. All three programs are targeted to students from the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences (geology) and related disciplines.

RISE Germany provides undergraduates in the USA and Canada the opportunity to gain practical experience by matching them with PhD research projects in Germany. RISE professional similarly places graduate students and above in German companies in STEM fields. Participants receive a DAAD scholarship to help cover living expenses and travel costs. The RISE website was recently revamped to provide up-to-date information for prospective applicants for each of the three programs. Check out the new website here: https://www.daad.de/rise/en/. The internship databases opened on December 1, 2015 and contain detailed information on all the opportunities for students in the summer of 2016.
