Budget Reductions at the District Level Not the School Level

The budget lines that support staff working at the district level were reduced by over $900,000.

Last fall the Blaine County School District embarked on a Financial Plan listening tour in order to ask for community and staff input for a 2016-17 budget that balanced revenues and expenditures. The district had been using its reserves for multiple years to augment revenues and meet its expenditures.

The community and staff told us that they wanted the district to continue its commitment to its small class size policy while making these reductions. Through collaboration and compromise the district was able to craft and approve a budget that reduces expenditures to match revenues (reserve funds will not have to be spent) while maintaining dollars for staff positions that work every day in the schools with our children.  Read more of the Superintendent's letter here.
Summer School + Summer Camp = Power Scholars

Last summer the Wood River Y partnered with the Blaine County School District to sponsor Power Scholars.  The Power Scholars program was offered five days a week for six weeks. 58 students benefited from literacy and math instruction, as well as emotional support, enrichment,  breakfast, and lunch each day.  Every Friday, Power Scholars took field trips to conduct first-hand research for a Kids' Guide to the Valley, written by Scholars and produced by the Weekly Sun.  Talk about engaged students who knew why they were learning literacy and writing!  Check out their final product here.  And special thanks to the Wood River Y, the Power Scholars staff, and the many supporters who made the program possible.

Thank You Blaine County Education Foundation
The Blaine County Education Foundation distributed 318 backpacks full of school supplies before the start of the school year.  BCEF collaborated with the Advocates, King's, James Christianson / Farmers Insurance, and Wood River Insurance.  The Wood River Women's Foundation provided a grant as well as volunteers to help.  BCEF Board members, BCSD staff and students also volunteered.  Thank you to everyone who contributed and helped students get off to the right start with the new school year!
Gender Inclusion Policy

In August the BCSD Board of Trustees passed a Gender Inclusion Policy.   All students need a safe, supportive school environment to progress academically and developmentally. The purpose of this policy is to foster an educational environment in the BCSD that is safe, supportive, and fully inclusive for all students, regardless of gender identify or gender expression as well as to facilitate compliance with applicable and governmental guidelines. Now, the district is tasked with implementing the policy through procedures.

Superintendent Dr. GwenCarol Holmes and Assistant Superintendent John Blackman met with all coaches, toured all schools, and spoke to various staff who are charged with implementing the policy. Procedures are in the process of being developed and next steps are being identified.  Please stay tuned for more information.  If you have questions, please ask your school principal or contact Assistant Superintendent John Blackman.
