Welcome Mr. Ken Rasp!

The welcome I have received since arriving in early July, has been nothing short of amazing.  Actually, my wife and I talked about the wonderful sense of hospitality and warmth we felt while participating in the interview process in March during our return drive to Kentucky.  To those of you who I have met on-campus, at the Crusader Open, at a football game, at the Irish Festival or wherever, thank you for opening your hearts and arms to me.  To those of you I have not had the chance to meet yet in person, please know that I look forward with great anticipation to the wonderful conversation that always seems to follow the introduction and hello.

I appreciate greatly the great sense of ownership that you have in MCC.  The tradition of excellence you fostered both in the classroom and on the playing field or court provides an incredible foundation for present day Crusaders to push ever forward and upward.  Please stay engaged by encouraging us to find new and improved ways to educate growing numbers of Crusaders in Spirit, Mind and Body, always centering on personal excellence within the Catholic tradition.

You are always welcome to return. Once a Crusader, always a Crusader.  May God bless you and keep you close to His heart.

CAMPUS NEWS
Computer Science

MCC now offers three computer science courses; Computing Technology for All, Introduction to Computer Science & Advanced Computer Science.  These courses are taught by new staff member, Jerry Mabrito.  Students will be introduced to the amazing world of the Internet, the web, computers and smartphones.  We live in the digital age and these courses will teach our students to theorize, design, develop and apply the software and hardware for programs that we use day in and day out.   These classes are held in the former Drafting classroom.

Cross Country Returns to MCC!

Currently we have 20 high school and 12
middle school students risking the adventure to be a part of our new Cross Country Program.  None of our students have ever run Cross Country before or been involved in distance running. This is truly a team of rookie runners, wonderful parents and two volunteer coaches, Don Martines and myself, Greg Russick '72.

We have an exceptionally supportive administration, Jason Stariha, Stephanie Weber and Allison Grinnell '02. The Athletic Department, under Mr. Stariha's leadership have helped schedule meets, order new uniforms and even come out to run with us on occasion. Our parents have been exceptional getting all of us to and from meets, working concessions to raise money and attending all meets with enthusiasm and support for all of our athletes. They have been extremely positive and supportive! Coach Martines has been a God Send volunteering, sharing wisdom, providing financial support and a great deal of compassion for our young athletes.  Also, I could not coach without the love and daily support of my bride and high school sweetheart, Penny Russick '72.  She is the love of my life and the one who encouraged me to do this.

The five seniors, Colleen Murphy, Kaycie Murphy, Emily Rauch, Lilli Conroy and Hieu Tran (Trent Smith) have taken the younger team mates under their wings and have provided nurture, companionship and continual leadership. I rely on them to lead warm up runs, stretches and workouts.

All of our athletes continue to improve by leaps and bounds!  I am so proud of these student athletes as they strive to do things on a daily basis with faith, work ethic and true character.

WHO'S ON CAMPUS
Pam Sundell
1st Grade Teacher

After graduating from Mona Shores, I went to Grand Valley State University and received a K-5 Self Contained and 6-8 Science degree.  I started teaching at Shoreline Elementary in Whitehall during the second half of the school year for Kindergarten, and then taught Young 5's the following year.  This will be my fourth year teaching first grade here at MCC!

I absolutely love music, sports, and kids!!!  I have been playing the piano since I was in the 4th grade, and played the viola in middle and high school.  I've also been involved in Track and Cross Country for middle, high school and in college.  One of my most memorable year was when I took first in the 1 mile, 2 mile, 1 mile relay and the 2 mile relay for the City Meet during my senior year of high school.  My team was the city champs as well with only 9 girls on the team!

My other memorable years was when I married my husband, Jason, in 2008 and had my two children, Ava (2) and Hudson (7 months).

I'm so happy to be at Muskegon Catholic!  I love that we can include God in our everyday teachings.  It's such a tight-knit family here, which was how I was raised, so I feel right at home!
Sheila Salisz '77
Middle School Math Teacher

I just started my eighth year as the MCC Middle School Math teacher.  Last year, I coached Math Counts for our inaugural  year.

I attended St. Mary's and Holy Trinity Elementary schools and graduated from MCC in 1977. I was the third of seven siblings to graduate from MCC. I married Joe Salisz '77 after graduating from WMU in 1981.  I taught at St. Jude and Holy Name parish schools in the Detroit area for 10 years.

In 1991, my husband and I returned to Muskegon to raise our family.  We have 4 children, Mark '06, Eric '08, Bridget '10 and Katherine '13 that have all graduated from MCC with a wonderful education.  We are now empty nesters.  This past summer we celebrated 35 years of marriage with our family in Montana.

In my spare time , I love to travel, read, walk at the beach, spend time with my family and return to MCC for "games."

Shelia and her family are members of St. Francis de Sales Parish.

Attending MCC was a great experience for me. I especially enjoyed participating in track and field with Coach Jerry Allore. After graduating from MCC in 1964, I went on to Michigan State University where I earned two Bachelor of Science degrees and a secondary teaching certification. A few years later I earned a Masters in Public Administration degree from the University of Arizona. A majority of my undergraduate studies were in psychology but my graduate school work was primarily in long-term care administration and gerontology. I have literally spent my entire career (45 years) caring for the elderly - managing, planning, constructing and turning around various skilled nursing/rehab facilities and retirement communities around the country.

My wife Elayne, a Mona Shores graduate ('65) and now retired RN with a varied practice including many years in the ER, and I have lived and practiced our professions in California, Arizona, Minnesota, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee and Virginia. We currently live in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. It has been a fun ride and I still enjoy my hand at consulting. Who knows maybe someday I will actually retire!

Together, Elayne and I have three wonderful children (Jeffrey, William and Rebecca) and seven grandchildren. These the love of our lives.

I wish everyone associated with MCC my very best wishes and a special thanks to all of the teachers, administrators and volunteers who do such a marvelous job.

When I was 19 years old I accomplished one of my most proud endeavors that I ever took on. I ran from Detroit to Muskegon for the American Cancer Society in an event that was called Strides for Life. It was an 8 day event that covered 25 miles per day to total 200 miles and finished at Pere Marquette Park here in Muskegon. I completed this run for three straight years and I have also run a couple of marathons and have been a very active runner for  over 35 years. I have ran more than 425 races over the years and still do about 25 races every year.

A couple years ago I was asked to help coordinate a run for the Muskegon Hume Home to raise money for the maintenance of the building. We had the race on September 10, 2012 and it turned out to be very successful raising $13,000.00 for the fund. The race is still being held today.

As for my personal life I have been married for 32 years to a wonderful lady named Eve and we have four children all of whom attended and graduated from Muskegon High School. Joe our oldest graduated in 2006 and has since graduated from Grand Valley State University and finished his master's degree at Detroit Mercy in Athletic Training and has been married for four years to Ashley. They have one child Nolan who is our first grandchild. Kathryn who graduated in 2008 attended Ferris State University and graduated in 2012 and now works at the university as their Events coordinator and is married to Derrick. Our middle daughter Erica attended Muskegon Community College and graduated from Grand Valley and currently works for Devil's Thumb Ranch in Colorado as an activities coordinator. Finally our youngest Anna is starting her senior year this fall at Grand Valley after graduating from Muskegon High School top 10 in her class and is pursuing a degree in hospitality and events with a minor in theatre. She is also a black belt in Taekwondo.

I work for International Aid as a gift in kind inventory manager and my wife is currently a nurse for DaVita Dialysis in Muskegon. I'm currently the cross country coach at Muskegon High School and I'm in my sixth season there and also coached track for 4 years. I of course love to run and we also like to travel every summer to different locations throughout the U.S. We love being empty nesters and traveled to Spain for our 30th anniversary trip. We also attend North Muskegon Harvest Bible Chapel and are very active within the church.

After graduating from MCC, I attended The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and earned my Bachelor's degree in Movement Science from The School of Kinesiology over the course of three years. Go Blue!

I pursued my curiosity in medicine by volunteering at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital on the Hematology/Oncology floor and in the pediatric cardiac surgery operating rooms for a year. Following this, I moved to downtown Detroit for medical school and spent countless, life-changing hours serving the hard-working people of Detroit at Wayne State University.

Following medical school, I moved to Washington, D.C. for residency training in Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University. It is here where I worked with some of the nation's leaders in Emergency and Critical Care and have worked side-by-side with the front runners in Health Care Reform in the White House and on the Hill. In addition, I have conducted clinical research in the patient-provider experience and costs of emergency care. I was selected by residency leadership this past year to serve as Chief Resident and was also honored to be the recipient of the Clinical Excellence Award in Emergency Medicine for outstanding patient care.

I have been in the D.C. area for over three years now and am enjoying my time in the big city immensely. It is here where I met my wonderful fiance who happens to be a buckeye from Columbus, OH. We enjoy exploring the sites, trying out new restaurants, and are active members of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish. Although I very much miss my family and friends back in Michigan, I am delighted to be serving the nation's capital and look forward to what the future will bring.
