Preparing for DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

As we prepare for the Fall season we are reminded that October is both Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Both are very important issues affecting women, but did you know that more than 15 times as many women are victims of severe domestic violence?

Sign up today to support survivors of domestic violence by registering for our annual 5k/10k run at:  https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/Roseville/StandUpPlacer
or make a donation to support a survivor at:

Our 6th Annual Stand Up and Run 5K/10K Event is our launch pad for the Domestic Violence Awareness Month of October.  Throughout October we focus on outreach to the community to educate and bring an end to domestic violence. If you are interested in a presentation or in helping us spread the word then please contact us soon.

Ways You Can Help

You may be reading this and think, "How can I help? How can I be a part of the wonderful work being done in my community?"

You may want become a financial supporter. One way to do that is to join our monthly giving program.
S ign up at  https://standupplacer.networkforgood.com/  and  have your small gift automatically withdrawn from your account each month. This is a painless, quick, easy way for you to impact the work being done at Stand Up Placer.

Alternatively, you can give goods. Our housing clients all need furniture and household items. That old set of pots and pans that you have sitting in the garage could go a long way to helping a survivor provide a meal for their family.

Volunteering is an excellent way to help! Stand Up Placer attempts to match all volunteers with an experience they will be passionate about and that will fulfill a need within the agency. Some positions require training but many do not. Please email volunteercoordinator@standupplacer.org  for more information.

Partner Highlights

The  Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints recently awarded us $5,000 in funding to provide food services to our survivors.  This grant allows impoverished residents of our housing programs to obtain healthy food and fresh produce for their families via the  Bishops Pantry program.  The church have been a terrific partner for many years and provide many services throughout the year.  Individual church members have also donated produce from their own gardens to our survivors. We are truly blessed that this wonderful relationship exists.

We are also fortunate that this relationship extends to  Deseret Industries and supports our survivors in establishing new homes with household items from their thrift store.

Members of the Society of  St. Vincent de Paul also support our survivors with a weekly delivery of fresh produce that is eagerly anticipated and helps them in the preparation of healthy meals for their families.

Recent donations of sofas, refrigerator and food from  The Church of Scientology in Sacramento has helped us complete our Drop-In Center for trafficking victims, which is now open for business and a recent event to collect gently used household items from their members resulted in many truck loads of furniture, washers/dryers and household items for our housing programs.

After 8 years of continual use our 55-Bed Safe House is in need of some Tender Loving Care. Thanks to  Ron Martinez and his buddy  Ken for helping to complete many of these much needed repairs.

3Strands Global - donated GracePacks (backpacks filled with pajamas, a blanket, hygiene packs, snacks, stuffed animal, and an encouraging note) to our drop-in center for survivors.

Lucy (Fountains at Roseville) - donates active wear monthly for survivors.

SOMA (Fountains at Roseville) -  donated a whole box of women's bras for survivors.

Planet Beauty (Roseville Galleria Mall) - donates beauty supply items monthly for survivors.

Roseville Police Department - collected and donated a box of hygiene items for the drop-in center.

The Grateful Garment Project - donated interview clothing for survivors at the drop-in center.

Southwest Airlines (Provisioning Team) - donated boxes of snacks for our drop-in center.

Soroptimist of Roseville, and Assistance League of Placer County donated much needed items to survivors.

Lana Parr's 1st grade class made homemade blankets and included personalized notes for survivors children.  The notes were very heartwarming.

Jim and Judy Ganulin donated SART hygiene products and 2 Papa Doo Run Run tickets for survivors to attend a recent concert.

Dr. Alexis Lyons and team at Douglas Blvd Dental & Orthodontics graciously provided dental and orthodontic services to a survivor who had worn braces for years and was financially unable to have the removed further promoting her insecurity. She is now SMILING again!

THANK YOU ALL for the great gift you give to survivors.

Success Stories  SS

We recently received a fabulous letter from one of our clients who came to us in October 2014 with nothing and is now financially independent, is buying her first car and about to open her own business.  Her story is so powerful that just a few snippets from the letter are included here, with more to follow later.

"In October 2014, I left my abuser. I was scared, emotionally exhausted, and had no where to stay. At the time, I was depressed and felt like giving up. I was scared to go back to my abuser, but it was starting to feel like I didn't have a choice again.....When I entered Stand Up Placer safe house, I didn't fully understand what I experienced was abuse. It was subtle, and emotionally crippling ....I lost all self confidence, as he looked for opportunities to tear me down as a mother, and person.....While in the Stand Up Placer safe house, through their amazing counseling resources, and support groups I learned how my co-dependency kept me in a toxic relationship. I learned that I could relate to all the women that had been physically abused as the emotional scars are harder to heal from.... I learned that my life was worth saving, and I could choose a life worth living. It gave me a foundation to build on and resources to accomplish goals I use to think I couldn't.... The people who make it all work at Stand Up Placer have enormous hearts to give, have taught me priceless life lessons, and given me the courage to stand. I don't have to stay broken and I can come back stronger if I fall."

In coming months we will share more about this survivors success story and many more like her.
Volunteer of the Month
Our Volunteer of the Month is Jewel Melton

Jewel has been a volunteer at Stand Up Placer since August 2013. She has been of invaluable support to survivors of sexual assault by being a long-standing advocate in our Sexual Assault Response Team (SART); she has also been a long-standing facilitator and leader of our Domestic Violence (DV) support group meetings in Auburn.

A quote from a staff member:
"Jewel is a superhero volunteer! We are so grateful for your enthusiastic commitment to the Auburn DV Support Group and faithfully serving on the SART team! The compassion that you show for clients is an inspiration to us all! Thanks for your superhero-sized gift - you have earned your cape!"

Our vegetable garden is looking fantastic
At the Safe House we have a vegetable garden. It has many benefits.  We grow vegetables for the table and we also encourage survivors to feel the earth and nurture the plants. It encourages the children to take ownership and create positive outcomes from hard work and careful attention. It is proving to be a very therapeutic and self-healing experience.

We call this Marianne's Garden.  Marianne is a volunteer. She pioneered the raised-bed project and has been responsible for obtaining supplies, seeds, plants and for maintaining it through the hot summer months.  Safe House clients are now using the garden daily and it has become a very important part of life in the Safe House and generates a cornucopia of fresh produce:
Tomatoes, Eggplant, Zucchini, Squash, Bell Peppers, Watermelon and Flowers.

THANK YOU MARIANNE for all your hard work in the garden.
