September is here and the kids are back to school. Now I will have to hire their parents. All kidding aside September already has us as busy workers. We expect to be flat out until the end of the year. We can expand to meet the demands of other projects, so please, keep them coming.
At TNG, we are developing more techniques in relation to 3D scanning to give you better models. We are getting deeper into developing cars and products to expand our markets with our high-tech scanners, skilled modelers, and our mobility. We are always researching new technology and software to keep the quality of our service at the highest level, and to accelerate our pipeline. We do our best to provide a great product to our customers. |

THE DAWNING OF THE AGE OF VR
|
What Does VR Content Look Like to You?
I remember the first time I looked into an Occulus Rift VR unit. It was at the 2014 VRLA Show at New Deal Studios. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I felt as though I had been ported back to the 80's rather than transported into the future.
Back then, the VR models were aliased and low resolution.
In order for consumer VR to be successful, the hardware has to be fairly powerful, so for this first generation of VR, the graphics require more tricks in order to display as aesthetic art.
We at TNG have been actively looking for a great entry point into VR with our photo-realistic digital content. An example being a complete 3D scan of a set for a VR experience that we completed for one client. Full body character scans can be utilized in the VR world, and we've pioneered the necessary tweaks for its pipeline.
At Siggraph 2016 I bought a small $20 headset to attach to my cell phone after sampling, and really liking the associated digital content. The difference two years has made is impressive. VR is now high resolution. It's a great tool for learning and for having new experiences (worldly or other-worldly).
The ability to look from side to side and also see what is above, below, and behind you is complete immersion.
We've gained a lot of ground since Google Cardboard was first introduced and we are eager to see how the end of the year pans out, and whether consumers adopt VR at the onset.
VR is new territory and has the remarkable ability to touch and connect us through shared experience.

Smile for Photogrammetry
Saying "cheese" while surrounded by
one-hundred cameras rigged for a simultaneous flash is typical for a photogrammetry shoot. Photogrammetry is fast; all the talent needs to do is step into position on a platform and hold a pose. In that one flash the cameras will capture all the information
necessary to map a high-resolution, photo-realistic 3D model.
The set-up for t
his type of shoot requires mounting all of the cameras onto a multi-pole structure, angled precisely onto several overlapping focal points on the subject. It is a technical,
lengthy, and arduous process and usually comes with an extra charge if the tech travels to your location.
If you prefer photogra
mmetry for your project and are within driving range of an excellent studio it may be worth your while to simply bring the talent in.
Since photogrammetry is such a specialized area, be sure to assess the work of the studio first by reviewing their on-line portfolio. Like most vfx projects timing and technical mastery are essential.

A TNG Visual Effects we can provide you with photogrammetry services and/or clean up and post process your existing photogrammetry files.

LIDAR - THE BIG GUN FOR THE BIG JOBS |
Light Radar (LiDAR) Scanning
When you need a large-scale prop, vehicle, interior or exterior of a building, a city block or other environments LiDAR 3D scanning is the answer.
When executing a LiDAR Scanning session the techs that come in can get the scan done quickly as long as everything is stationary. If the set or prop is very complex more time will be needed to allow for positioning the equipment. A TNG scanning tech can accurately give you an estimate of the time needed.
Deliverables depend on what you have available in-house. The raw data of a LIDAR scanner is a point cloud which is typically millions of points (vertices). Generally it is preferred to have the point cloud processed into a surface so that is has polygons and can have UVs and textures. We complete the post-production for vehicles and build out the complete 3D models. On environments we deliver the aligned data with a surface in an OBJ file. This could be upgraded to a finished model.
Integrating the scanning into the overall project is key, and we always strive to do our part as quickly and accurately as possible so the project can ma
intain its momentum.
